What operating system do they use ?

  1. 1. What operating system do they use ?

I'm rather shocked at the number of votes for KERBOL (my own included). But I assume all those who are old enough to even get that joke know that its butt was the furthest thing removed from a technical math-friendly language, and are wondering where KORTRAN is on this poll, punch cards and all :).

I assumed they didn't calculate anything let alone use computers - as far as i can tell they just throw things up and see how far they go! Even in the VAB they just slam parts into other parts until they stick!

If they do use an OS its gotta be a Linux based product - open source is the only way i can see kerbals developing software.

I would put my bets on Unix-like system with KDE, but I can't be serious with second one.

When it comes with rocket components software You are dealing with other challenges than on "regular" computers in processing centers or workstations so VxWorks and other real time systems could be better choice.

I'd imagine just like the RL apollo program it's go some simple name like our "Real Time Operating System" it's custom written for the flight and is not commercially available.

I can see a room of Kerbal programmers cranking out punch cards, or wiring magnetic core memory.
