Real world vs Kerbal dimensions

When creating parts inspired by real craft how do people usually work out the right dimensions?

Is is just dividing by 2 and seeing which standard width it's closest to?

Say for example I wanted to make a Skylon. Its fuselage is 6.75 meters wide. Should I make it 3.75 meters wide?

You can work from the fact that Kerbals are just over a meter tall, if my memory serves me right, though their individual body parts aren't in proportion with humans. To get an exact measurement of a Kerbal's height and other common lengths that aren't obvious, you can use Jeb's Big Stick. You will probably want to adhere to one of the standard calibers (0.625, 1.25, 3.75...) from there on because your mod will be used in an environment populated by other stuff that does.

See I see this weird thing when people create replicates of real world things.

Kerbals are like 64% of humans, but the planets and distances between, and thus the delta-v requirements are 11%

So when we recreate the apollo it has to 64% to fit the same number of kerbals, but now it has way too much delta-v.

Even though I love the recreations I just feel weird about them.

Well, the 64% standard is only for modeling purposes. it in no way represents a proper scaling of the capabilities of real craft, precisely because of the differences in Kerbin's physics. So you can't just multiply the height, diameter, mass, thrust, etc by .64 and call it down.

You model your craft to that size, and then figure the new volumes and whatnot from there, and compare it to like sizes stock parts or other similar mods, and then balance it against what you're trying to do. There is some guesswork and some compromising to do

64% is the bobcat standard. Use this for all things modelling. To balance the craft is up to you. When I was testing the Soyuz for Bobcat one of the guys did a chart with the right burnout times and stuff for the rocket. Using those accurate figures made the soyuz and interplanetary SSTO. Just play with it till it feels right.
