while people are excited about new features coming,.....

It is unlikely everyone working on Kerbal has the skills to help with those problems. And those that would have the skills are probably needed to do some work on the new feature everyone else is making assets for. So unfortunately, focusing on just bug fixing and optimization would probably mean leaving a good chunk of the workforce under utilized.

What the OP is missing is that every update has a performance optimization patch that comes with it that makes KSP run a little smoother each time. Optimization of a game isn't a massive single patch that instantly fixes all the lag and loading times.

I just had this same discussion about Arma 3. No matter what, it will never be good enough for some people. Just take a step back and think, the game its still in alpha. With most games you won't even see this stage of development. We should be thankful we are given the chance to see the beginning of something great.

I am also looking forward to optimisation, as I've been getting more crashes lately.

Sure, I've had things running in the background more lately, but it's always nice.

But mostly, science. I'm putting of a few missions until then.

Focusing on optimization now would be silly. The game is being made, now it is the time to add new features and balance existing ones. When the game is complete, then that will be the time to optimize.

For now I think it is better to have a "been there, done that" than just "been there"

Yeah, software optimization doesn't work like you could first focus on that and than implement the rest of the game. If they were to optimize the current build completely, they would lose a big part of that optimization again when they need to modify existing code - and need more time for that, as well. In general, you develop first and optimize then, but as this game is already being played, a certain amount of optimization is very much needed to keep it playable. Especially the memory usage and the restriction to 32Bit just limits modding way to much, because with a certain amount of mods, you run out of memory. But I think Squad knows what they're doing, at least better than us.

You're also looking at a lot of limitations imposed by the Unity Engine, which is itself under heavy development. The Squad team has been pretty quick about translating applicable updates to the game as the Unity engine updates also. A lot of optimizations and the memory limits fall into this category, but as long as Squad and the Unity dev team keep up with each other, all should be well in the end.

I think what someone said earlier is right, each patch <have yet to see a new patch yet, as I came in only just after .21 dropped> is more optimal than the prior with things having been smoothed out some. Heck, I watch some of the older videos on youtube where the game is in like .16-.17 or there abouts and then look at what is on MY computer and I am floored at how much more optimal the game is NOW compared to then. Relax, we are in Alpha, things will improve, till then, keep Bill, Bob and Jeb entertained!
