Kerboom Super Comics

So something like this (from halo reach) :

Only a bit of that style here and there. Mostly the layered parts, elevated roadways, sharp edges, and such.

I envision the cities will be somewhat condensed. Like the kerbals forgot they could spread out and simply built upwards and downwards from their original villages. When they build roads through the city they don't even bother to go around, they just build tunnels through the buildings, like this image from Pete Amachree.

Or they just layer them and forget to make intersections. Images from Macross Plus and Ghost in the Shell

Here's a character that will appear briefly in the first story. As seen, it's your typical Iron Man/Batman Beyond amalgam, but with a few twists I'll be adding. It still needs some work and will go through some more changes before it makes an appearance to help poor bumbling Kerboom solve a mystery.

Great, now I want a modeling person to built me a new hazard space suit with emergency reentry wings ... :P;)

How's it going?

I should have some effects tests to post this week. Maybe a few other things. I've already sketched out the scenes for Kerboom's origin story; a very Kerbal chain of events. Thought of just finishing that one first, that way I don't have to interrupt the Kraken story with flashbacks. Not sure.

Learning different styles, fonts, and colors used in comics. Here are a few examples I came up with. Played a little with the sound-effects. Found it amusing to steer away from the usual VROOOOM, KRAAAKKKK, and SKRBAAAASSSHH and just say what the effect was.

Hmmm. The Launch one is backwards. It should start out with large letters and get smaller as the ship flies into the distance. I'll switch that around later.

Communicating: I'm going to do something strange with this. Since Kerbals read/write English but don't speak it, I will attempt to simulate this by only having Kerbals speak in speech bubbles with an icon or two, much like The Sims and their moods. The idea is to have you look at the icon, have your brain recognize it, but also hear the kerbals mutter it in their own language. This will get tricky at times, but it's an amusing idea for me to try. Where needed I can at least have a narrator translate in English.

I approve of these choices for the material. It's this kind of comical simplicity that makes KSP's potentially dry physics simulation fun and digestible for a wide audience. This feels familiar and promises to be entertaining.

Outstanding work all around!

Thanks!

So...this dead?

No, just had to pause for a bit cuz of my current work load. A lot of clients decide to throw projects at me right after the holidays and it takes time to get through.

Very nice! Looking forward to more.

I think, though, that some of the effects don't work. They're not, well a sound like "BOOM" for "explode" or "FWOOSH" for "launch".

Heh. Yeah, some will work better than others. Will have to experiment with what sounds good and has that silly, whimsical feeling.

Figured I show the slow process of bringing this story to life.

Below are a few sketches showing the early steps I go through in blocking out the story. Usually it starts with a few seconds of sketching, then days of thinking (there may or may not be hands zooming around with sound effects at this point), then a few more seconds of sketching, some more days of thinking, then refining the sketching in blue (I like blue), scribbling in some colors, and thinking some more. Then finally come the hours of cleaning up the image, shading, adding shadows and highlights, effects, then words. Sometimes the pace will be too quick (such as the bottom flow) and I'll go back in and fill in the missing parts of the action so that the reader knows what is happening.

Anything new?

Nothing I can post yet. :( Drawing what I can in my spare time. Hopefully this month I can get the origin story up.

There is one thing though. I've been pondering the whole straight-up superman outfit thing. Maybe I'll post the new color schemes/suit styles I've been working on that nod to the guy but isn't such a direct copy.

First teaser image for new name of series (since the stories won't all be just about Kerboom).

kerbalheroes_kerboom_by_hayoo.jpg

Been working on these stories for a while. The expanded series features five main kerbal heroes, with Kerboom's story shown first and origins for the others coming after (origins nearly always involving the rare "Blutonium-3" and an explosion). I am currently building the main city where many of the stories take place, located about 10km north of KSC on the coast. Adventures will spring up in this city, at the space port, and out in space.
