NASA is shutting down?

"Today is the last day of the fiscal year (FY) for 2013, and the new fiscal year for 2014 starts tomorrow, October 1. Although negotiations are ongoing to pass FY 2014 appropriations, it is possible no agreement will be reached, requiring a shutdown of ordinary operations. If a FY 2014 continuing resolution is not passed before 12:01 AM on October 1, NASA can only engage in activities related to the orderly shutdown of operations and performance of excepted activities. As a required part of a shutdown, employees who will not be performing activities excepted by law will be furloughed and unable to work for the duration of the shutdown, unless recalled for an excepted activity. According to our executed shutdown plan, all employees were notified by September 30 whether they were excepted/on-call or non-excepted in the event of a shutdown. If you have questions on your status, please consult with your supervisor."

Does anyone know whether it's really happening?

With no acceptable budget being passed by the Republican-dominated house pretty much every aspect of the federal government will close down as of October 1'st. That includes NASA sadly.

Oh. Well, that sucks. I hope they will find some solution.

In this case it is all about a small number of Republican's trying for a 43 time to destroy Obamacare. The really sad thing is they don't necessarly care if the rest of the government or the American people suffer as a result of the shutdown, and I'm willing to bet that once they realize this has failed they will make a 44'th attempt to kill Obamacare when it comes time to get the debt ceiling raised which means it is remotly possible that we could see a partial US default in the coming days.

Of course the only upside of all of this is if that happens the GOP won't be able to win elections for a very very long time & 2016 will be almost a gaurenteed democrat victory. The really unfortunate thing is the SLS and a return to the Moon will be pushed back even further as a result of the shutdown.

From http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-24302508

"Staff involved in overseeing commercial space launches would also continue operations - as at least one of a succession of launches will occur between the end of September and the first week in October in support of the International Space Station, according to the department."

However that was under "Department of Transport", it doesn't mention NASA. I presume they won't be closing offices supporting ongoing missions...

Belgium managed 589 days *without an elected government* recently, let alone anyone to set budgets.

There has been no acceptable budget passed in who knows when. For years now congress has just been passing extensions of this, that, or the other. Make no mistake about it. This is all about the Affordable Healthcare Act. All sides involved are responsible, not just Republicans. The only way that I can see for U.S. citizens to regain control of their government is to vote for someone that is not a Republican or a Democrat, as they are nothing more than two faces on the same head.

Pretty much what I said in my second post. Although I would disagree on your second point, it is a historical fact that Democrats generally manage the economy much better then Republicans with the largest single periods of economic growth being delivered under Democrat Presidents & the last democrat President (Clinton) actually delivered a balanced budget. Which is something that none of the last three Republican Presidents have managed to do. Ironically had President Bush stuck with the Clinton budgets we would have payed off the entire national debt in FY 2010 and be close to a trillion dollar surplus. Instead we are in a 16 trillion hole.

The major party caucuses are like the mafia. They will lie, cheat, and steal to get what they want. If you run as a republican and then you go off on your own platform, good luck funding your re-election campaign. Same with democrats. They set the campaign bar so high on purpose so that it becomes impossible for third parties and even members of their own party who they do not support for some reason or another, to even have a chance. Theoretically it can be done, but there are way too many uneducated lazy bums that only vote based on that one letter next to the name and it's that vote the big parties count on to keep them from getting kicked out by the educated people.

I missed your second post, sorry about that. If you believe that Democrats are any better than Republicans or vice-versa, you are in for a rude awakening. They are simply playing a game of good cop - bad cop in order to pull the wool over the eyes of the people, who, by the way, truly do have the real power. They've just forgotten that. Until "We the People" can find a way to put aside our petty disagreements, and start actually caring for one another instead of "it's all about me", Democrat and Republican leaders alike will be the only ones to benefit.

When one adds together several pieces of information from the past few weeks an interesting picture emerge:

* SpaceX launches sucessfuly Falcon 9v1.1

* Orbital Sciences launches sucessfuly Cygnus

* Chinese space agency announces that they want to share Tiangong station with other countries

* NASA shuts down for a few weeks (?)

And by the end of the year China is going to perform first soft lunar landing since 1976.

It is and it isn't really being shut down. With the shut down of non essential branch's of government to save money and to continue paying off our large debt. NASA is being shut down but the current missions that there in control will remain in operation and will still be staffed except with out a full staff just will a skeleton staff. But those working security or construction for NASA will be sent home without a paycheck.

NASA did launch LADEE and will soon launch MAVEN to Mars.

Isn't there any other parties you can vote for? :P

This, essentially, is their problem. With only two viable parties it's very hard for a government without a clear majority to make any arrangements to ensure they can pass essential confidence and supply bills.

Hello there :)

Guys, you know the deal. Our [thread=30064]Forum Rules[/thread] prohibit political discussion. I know that this particular subject is universally important to our entire community, but when people start pulling the "Republicans vs Democrats!" and "Finances" cards, the argument is bound to turn sour.

Closing this now.
