ASAS actually being used as intended?

Recommended Posts

Sometimes it comes as a shock to me that people use ASAS on rockets and in-space vehicles. If I want to keep a stationary ship from drifting I'll let it control the reaction wheels sometimes, otherwise time warp is my ASAS (see signature). For that matter, I don't think I've ever had ASAS use the RCS. It's like the two are mutually exclusive for me. I've docked 80 ton vehicles with less than 120 RCS before because I use timewarp to stop my velocity instead of the highly inefficient ASAS.

At the same time, I realize that timewarp isn't exactly a realistic feature, and using it as a "kill-all-angular-velocity-for-free" button might be seen cheating as some. I just value the fact that I can either stop whatever vector change manually or timewarp, and that I'm now completely isolated from the ASAS arguments which were ongoing back when 0.21 came out.

So, my question to you guys is, what do you use and why? Timewarp, ASAS, or manual-only? For realism's sake or convenience's?

Im not sure I understand your question...

I use ASAS on everything. Timewarp is not a replacement for ASAS?

I specified in-space for a reason. Timewarp kills angular velocity instantly without and reactions occurring, whereas ASAS wastes fuel but doesn't require the effort of doing it manually. ASAS is good for limited station keeping in my opinion, as I said above, but I find that just hitting > is easier than actually using RCS or reaction wheels.

I was just curious as to what others use.

Ah I get it now. Well timewarping to stop all movement seems a bit cheaty in my mind. But I usually only use it when Im in a dire situation (Flat spins)

So I guess about 90% ASAS and 10% timewarp for me :)

ASAS doesn't waste fuel if you turn off RCS before using it.

It's also very handy for maintaining heading while translating with thrusters to dock, if your craft isn't perfectly balanced.

This.

Its saved my butt plenty of times while docking unbalanced craft.

I'll happily use timewarp to kill rotation that I didn't cause, such as a stationary station that just starts rotating.

When doing transfer burns, ASAS will hold my heading. When docking, I use ASAS on and off to hold my heading, generally without RCS which I turn off while ASAS is on.

Well obviously you balance your Rcs really well TC. Good goin. I just kinda eye it up and let ASAS cancel out any error. In fact... On small craft. I do not balance RCS. I put thrusters at the top or bottom, then an ASAS module on the opposite side. Works great. I'm using NovaPunch wheels though. So I can imagine avoiding stock modules. There not exactly low profile.

As far as I understand, the primary function of SAS (there is no ASAS anymore, it's just SAS) is not to kill rotation of a craft at rest (no thrust), but to maintain attitude under thrust. The only time I use it to kill rotation is when I'm docking, and with the improvements in 0.21 you don't have to worry so much about wasting RCS fuel. Sometimes I use timewarp to stop rotation, but that's usually only with really big or unbalanced crafts. I don't consider it cheating or an exploit, but I can see how others would.
