Constellation Space Program - Three Part Challenge

ChemRock presents it's newest Pressure Drop Program designs:

http://i.imgur.com/2OEm7KK.png

The 2*Moff Block II is a update of the old 2*Moff. It now comes with several science parts. The descend module is a fully functional science station with independent energy and communication.

http://i.imgur.com/04P2XAj.png

The 2*Vyr Pressurized Rover will endable the crew of the proposed münar outpost to cover long distances fast and safely.

http://i.imgur.com/FyFoji4.png

The 2*Irfan Compact Outpost will be the centrepiece of the münar outpost.

  • Pressurized rover: Develop a rover that can seat at least two crew in a pressurized pod. This rover can be delivered with a crewed or uncrewed Altair lander, an Outpost Variant lander or a specialized Cargo Altair that brings only the rover (+2)
  • Outpost Variant: Develop a version of the Altair that can land robotically and has enough room for 1.5 times your Altair landing crew size (round up). Eg. If your Altair lander seats 4, the Outpost Variant should have pressurized seats for 6. If your Altair lander seats 5, your Outpost Variant should seat 8. The Outpost Variant can have, but does not require, the ability to return from Munar surface. (+2)

That should be 4 engineering points. I will claim the science point once I officially land the 2*Moff Block II on the Mün.

I like your 2*Irfan Compact Outpost.. is the massive Science Lab heavy enough to avoid being a little tippy? Curious to see how you're landing that, too! :D

I've got you at 52 Design and 26 Mission points.. that look correct?

Hello WooDzor..

Those are beautiful replicraft and would really like to see them in a full "Constellation Space Program" challenge submission. However, I've just added a "Mars Direct" sub-challenge for the Duna landing missions only. If you choses to submit just the sub-challenge Duna missions, please do so.

If you want to complete a submission, it should include the Space Station and Munar missions as well as developmental missions. I see you have an Orion craft docked to the Copernicus so we're just looking for Altair and Space Station missions.

The max points for this sub-challenge is 30 and all previously submitted entries qualify (I will go through the entries and add up the scores in a bit).

NEW: There is a new rules sub-set for anyone wishing to develop only the Mars/Duna spacecraft and carry out the "red planet" landing missions. See "Mars Direct Challenge" below. All previously submitted entries already qualify.

http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/71225-Consternation-Mission-to-Duna ok lemme try and combine some missions of mine into one

ConsternationII%20%286%29.png

another little teaser :# I am downloading the youtube movie from your first post.. let's get this right :D

Haha, no - it's tippy like *****, but I was in the mood for a queer design :D

Well, you land it....carefully. You'll see ;)

Konstellation Space Program Redux

Completed the Ares V Heavy Lifter and performed several tests.

Heavy Cargo Lift Vehicle (Ares V)

  • Five or six liquid engines on first stage (+3)
  • Does not jettison any radial liquid tanks/engines (+2)
  • Uses and jettisons at least two solid fuel boosters on first stage (+1)
  • Two stage rocket to LKO: After the first stage is dropped, the second stage (EDS), carries payload to orbit +2)
  • Can carry the Earth Departure Stage (EDS) and Orion BLock 1 to low orbit without using any fuel from the EDS (+1)
  • EDS Bonus: Second stage can put Orion Block 1 into Munar free-return trajectory (+2)

Design: 36

Mission: 10

This Ares V is capable of lifting 85t to LKO which will be more than enough to support the Altair and Duna lander. Seen on the pad here with 83t payload, the rocket was also used on a Munar flyby proving mission.

Made some progress on my duna ambitions.

There's a Kethane satellite in orbit, and a lander that is designed to return the Kerbals from the surface of Duna en route all ready. I don't have a Kethane rig set up that will work on Duna yet but a Duna or Ike refiner is in the planning stages.

I've just finished work on the Duna Crew departure vehicle, this is a reusable vehicle that can carry a transfer vehicle and a crew of 8 kerbals to Duna and back. The Orion spacecraft will ferry crew to the DCDV, the crew will live on the DCDV during the transfer, and then once in a Low Duna Orbit the Orion spacecraft will ferry crew to the Duna Lander. Next project will be the Duna Lander which will deposit a crew of 4 on the Duna Surface, and I need to develop something that will serve as a long term habitation outpost.

Alright, my equipment is coming along nicely, but a Procedural Parts glitch is ruining it all. What I mean is that the SRB nozzle for Ares I appears in the wrong place. Will I still get the full points for it if the first stage is a Sepratron, which really does nothing (and is still technically an SRB) and then make the rest of the rocket an SSTO? I'd hate to rules lawyer like this, but I also see no alternative, since that glitch always appears on the Ares I first stage. I will try to find ways around this, I don't want it to be this way, but if I really have no other option, will you accept an entry like that?

Yeah that's no problem. Something out of your control sounds glitched.

Deployment of the 2*Vyr rover.

Just let me point out that the 30 km trip to the outpost took about 30 minutes. So the rover had a average speed (if there was a straight connection) of ~60 km/h or ~40 mph. I think that is quite neat for a münar environment.

Indeed that is booking it across the surface! :sticktongue: That would make good video...

Crew Launch Vehicle (Ares I) - Max 11 points

Boilerplatetest01launch_zpsc8bad59c.png

Two stage rocket to LKO (+2)

Does not jettison any radial stages (solid or liquid tanks/engines) (+2)

Can carry Orion Block 1 to low orbit without using any fuel from the Orion service module (+1)

Can carry Orion Block 2 to low orbit without using any fuel from the Orion service module (+2)

Uses any solid fuel booster on first stage (+1)

Uses only solid fuel on first stage (+3)

Total Score: 8

Notes: Only a small amount of fuel from the Block I/II was used, and the upper stage ends up falling back to Keban as did the RL Ares I. I did use Mechjeb on this particular launch as it was a early test launch where I was still working out the bugs in the design, but I have flown it since without - just don't have a pic of the particular launch.

Crew Vehicle (Orion) - Max 14 points

Block 1/2 bonus: Develop a Block 2 with slightly higher delta-V. Block 1 is intended for low orbit missions and the Block 2 for Munar/deep space missions (+1) Block II can get to the edge of the Kerban sphere of influence and back with fuel to spare.

Total Score: 14

Note:

First Block I Orion had a capacity for a crew of 5. Second has a capacity for a crew of 7, BUT for in-game purposes the 7th seat is considered to be taken up by supplies and other mission critical equipment and is left empty at launch.

I would like to remind everyone that i am not dead nor is my attempt. I just kind of took a break to get back into SCII. I should hopefully have a nice big update once i figure out where the heck i left off. I've got a folder of screenshots and no idea what i did in them.

Good to hear! Looking forward to updates.

I've decided to restart with the release of 0.24. Mainly to take advantage of the 64 bit support that is now available.

Good idea. I guess I was lucky - my "Konstellation" save moved over to 0.24 without a hitch. I also really appreciate the roll-enabled gimbal with the 6-engine Ares V cluster!! :D

Konstellation Space Program Redux Update

This update completes the Munar and Space Station points and starts the Science points. The Duna program has not even left the minds-eye yet, so might be a bit before this re-do is re-wrapped and re-spun.

Hello once again everyone. Im here with a minor/major update. Lets begin discussing duna:

For this mission i chase an interesting path combining a few mods (mostly kethane and KAS) to make the mission "closer" to the actual one. For this mission i chose four launches. First is a kethane scanning probe. This was slated to arrive first and begin scanning the planet a day in advance*. Next i sent the unmanned kethane processor, ascent stage, and outpost each a day or so apart in arrival times. The plan is to find a suitable landing position and begin production of fuel/oxidizer. To make things harder i made sure that the ascent stage only has enough fuel to land in the lower stage and none in the upper stage at all(to mimic the real plan). Basically im at the point where everything is in orbit and ready to begin landing. Here's the documentation:

*contrary to what i thought, kethane scanners dont scan unless you follow them. It was a nice idea though.

~~~THANK YOU~~~ seriously i was wondering why that happened sometimes. Its really quite annoying.(and i didn't have this problem with any of my other posts)
~Notice that the outpost is multi-purpose. it contains all science as well as acting as 2 pressurized rovers that seat 6. all modules can separate and be driven around before rejoining. (it really was a pain to fly and land though)
