How to work the 'old' Science Equipment in 0.22?

Playing around with KSP now 0.22 is here and I noticed, in my old save, my science stuff on the hull of my ISS has a 'Log' button but does not seem to work. Do we need Kerbals near them, carrying out EVAs, in order to 'Log' - or record - the results? Any body figure this one out yet?

You need to play career mode to be able to use any science, in which case the 'log' button works.

I see. Does the data go onto the crew's report?

Science from the thermometer and those other fun toys is stored in the toy, so if you want to take several logs you need to either transmit the data or pack several thermometers.
