So.. there is no one else experiencing this problem? Am I and one other I believe the only ones to have this issue? What in all hells could I be doing different then hundreds of others? Is everyone just ignoring it? I.. don't see how this could be. There must be SOMETHING I am missing here.. DRE is just unplayable for me and its been that way for months.

If you don't mind.. may I ask about your graphical setup/settings? Gpu, type of Vsync, AA, AF settings, etc.

GPU: NVidia GTX 570

AA 2x

AF...you mean AeroFX? Normal

VSync: Every VBlank

Resolution: 1920x1080

Frame Limit 60

Pixel Light Count 8

shadow cascade 4

delta time limit 0.04 (which... actually I forget if that's where I really want it....)

Antistropic filtering.

Pixel Light Count 8 and cascades at 4? ... my sliders are maxed out on that one. I wonder if that could be it.. well either way it gives me something to try. Thanks Starwaster.

Wonder if the delta time could affect is a well..

EDIT: No.. just made it worse. Wow what a bummer... I was REALLY hoping to get to try DRE with a new play through. Im going to have to go without it... again. Checkmate indeed.

Theoretically it could, but if that's possible, I was not able to replicate your problem with any setting of delta time. And I tried.

Alright guys I'm getting pretty frustrated. I've tried a periapsis of 25km, 35km, 45km and 50km. Angled my MK1 with the pod facing at retrograde and I blow up every single time. I am using DRE with realistic setting according to the first page ie: shockwave multiplier and exponent are at 1.12. What am I doing wrong guys?

With the Mk1 pod I have to put on a extra heat shield at the bottom, or else my chutes burn off because the pod heats up too much(or at least I think that's what happens).

Do note that this tend to happen on return from one of the moons, I can't recall it were ever a problem from LKO, and it might also be because I favor the radial chutes(one on each side).

(There are people arguing that one should go into an orbit around Kerbin before landing, but I'm not of that viewpoint, pretty sure Apollo had a direct landing without a parking orbit. If only I could find a way to pinpoint my KSC landing from the Mun, that'd be sweet).

Are you also using RSS rated heat shields? If not then you don't want to use the realistic settings. Setting multiplier/exponent to 1.12 is the equivalent of playing RSS.

I don't have RSS, however when I leave the setting as normal there is zero heat damage whatsoever, even if I come in flipping.

If you don't want to download the RSS heat shields, but you want a challenge, there's another option: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/54954?p=820787#post820787. Not sure why it's not on the OP, I've had quite a bit of fun with FlowerChild's mod. And by fun, I mean losing a few ships before I realized the optimal descent path is shallower than in ordinary DRE.

It's not a question of having RSS. It's a question of turning up the heat and wondering why things are hot. You're apparently using settings rated for RSS, consequently you need the shields rated as such.

So I go to the RSS thread and it says it needs the Realism Overhaul Pack ... I go to Realism Overhaul Pack and it says I need Deadly Re-Entry for the heat shields ... now I'm just getting confused. What heat shields do I need exactly... sigh...maybe its bedtime.

I dunno much more than you in that regard, just that it would prolly be better to try smaller increments to get the results you want vs going all the way to RSS-rated settings.

I understand that it just doesn't make sense to me why nobody else has this problem and why the recommended settings wouldn't work for me. Sigh ... thanks anyway.

You can stick this in your Gamedata folder (preferably in whatever you use to store tweaks in.... you did make a tweaks folder right?)

@PART[*]:HAS[@MODULE[ModuleHeatShield]]
{
@MODULE[ModuleHeatShield]
{
!dissipation
dissipation
{
key = 300 0
key = 800 1260
}
}
}

Be warned though, that's pretty much just a generic blanket solution. Using the right configs from the RO pack gives better individualized settings per shield. But what I'm giving you above will work.

Do I have to install the whole RO pack or can I just use the heatshields?

Oh okay, I see what it's doing now.

You already have heat shields from Deadly Reentry, so instead of downloading a new set you just make a module manager config like the one Starwaster posted.

open up a text file, paste that stuff in, rename it to WhateverYouWantToNameIt.cfg, then put it in the GameData folder or the subfolder of your choice.
