Is it possible to convert a sandbox game to a career mode game?

Recommended Posts

I have a long term game I call the "Massive Space Program" somewhat in the same tradition as Scott Manley's reusable space program with a slightly different slant on things (mass production -> cheaper spacecraft and lifters) + reusability. I'd like to convert it to career mode. It uses certain mods, some I've figured out, others I haven't tried yet to make work with the new version.

Wondering if it's possible. Since new features and capabilities are going to be added to career mode, I'd like this game to work with it.

Thank you.

The point of career mode is to challenge you by taking away most parts and make you unlock them by building bigger and bigger missions bringing in more and more science. If you just drop in several generations of ship building into an early career, you're sort of defeating the point.

Most major part mods have been incorporated into the stock tree. Your best bet is to install these mods ( there's also custom tech trees, but part placement might be off if u have mods ) and start a fresh save. Work your way through the new tree. Then once everythings unlocked career turns into sandbox. So its the opposite of what you want unfortunately.

Yes, because the point is to start with nothing and build your way up, not start with everything and see how quickly you can unlock the tech tree with 20+ flights in progress.

I suppose it's easier for me to talk about starting from nothing, I lost over ~100hrs of ship building and saves, and bases on 4 planets when I reformatted my computer. So starting from scratch in .22 was not really a decision for me . . . computer runs great though. Love it to death again.

Actually I finished unlocking everything in the tech tree two days ago. Did it in 8 missions. I could've cut it down to six since one of the missions was a minmus flyby that should've been a landing (time accelerated too far) and the other mission (DUNA mission) suffered from a badly designed lander. It was supposed to land on Duna and Ike. Finally went to Ike instead after several tries.

The point is -- I already did it all. I just want to incorporate a very big effort I've been doing since once you've unlocked everything, you're basically back to sandbox mode.

I believe it is possible, try to do this:

- Make sure you have updated all your mod for .22

- Backup your persistant file (of course)

- open persistant.sfs

- change the (Sandbox) in the name with (CAREER)

- Change the mode = 0 with mode = 1

- Change AllowStockVessels to False

- change to match

EDITOR
{
CanSave = True
CanLoad = True
CanStartNew = True
CanLaunch = True
CanLeaveToSpaceCenter = True
CanLeaveToMainMenu = False
startUpMode = 0
craftFileToLoad =
}

- look or add

SCENARIO
{
name = ResearchAndDevelopment
scene = 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
sci = xxx
Tech
{
id = start
state = Available
part = mk1pod
part = liquidEngine
part = solidBooster
part = fuelTankSmall
part = trussPiece1x
part = longAntenna
part = parachuteSingle
}

}

where xxx is the amount of science point you need to unlock all the nodes.

- delete the quicksave to make sure you don't accidently reload it

load the game, go in the R&D, unlock every nodes/parts

and make sure all the current flight are working.

I haven't tried it, but it should work.

Unless you want your space program ships and bases to be all at places where you have them in the old game, you can try to just start a new career and copy all ships files to its folder. The game will only allow you to load ships for which you have all the technology unlocked. Once you unlock them, you can proceed to place them wherever they belong.

@AntonDV: Reason is simple, I'd like all the base features to _work_ so that means career mode. Since it looks like most of the emphasis in the future is going to be career mode.

@UbioZur: Thank you!

@Kasuha: I'd like to do that but it's a lot of work. I have 3 different flotillas (1 to jool, 1 to eve and 1 to moho) + stations and mining outposts. I'd be a lot of effort to put that back from scratch. :D But I guess I'll do it if I don't have a choice in the matter.
