It's KSP......Lite

Hi All

A little something for Kindle users. (Or I suppose "Android" users?)

I have a quick look each day to see what the Free App of the day is on my Kindle Fire and today it was a game called "Simple Rockets".

The concept sounded more than a little familiar and sure enough once installed it's pretty clear that the author has been more than a little inspired by "KSP". (A couple of aspects actually made me wonder if the folks at Squad were involved.)

It's 2D and obviously (at least from what I have seen) not anything like as extensive, but if you're out and about and fancy a fix of something almost.. but not quite Kerbally, this might be just the ticket.

On iOS, if you actually type 'KSP' on the app store theres a similar 2D clone (if it can be called that) called Space Agency.... Also more than a little very much inspired by KSP. Never tried it tho, it aint free and im not feeling like giving money to them :P

It certainly is an interesting little game. I've only flown one mission, just to see how well the whole thing handles, and it's not bad. Very obviously inspired by KSP.

At least it handles orbital mechanics better than Space Agency, which is, despite my seemingly negative comment just then, also a good game. Unfortunately, I think the Kindle version has a bug that's stopping me from progressing past the mission where you fly the atmospheric probe into GRN :(

Oh well, if I want to send a probe into a green planet, there's always Jool...

Other than being 2d and having a complete lack of struts, fuel lines, EVA/IVA, flywheel torque and as near as I can tell, anything bearing any resemblance to Kerbal Engineer Redux, a KSP player will feel right at home with SimpleRockets. Space Agency isn't bad but your understanding of orbital mechanics will go completely wasted there, its orbital mechanics sound like something someone would come up with if they didn't know orbital mechanics and tried to approximate them with "common sense" (prograde burns speed up your orbit but don't change the path, radial burns change your orbit altitude).

Oh, and no maneuver nodes.

On the other hand, being 2d makes landing much easier.

The game has built in challenges and leaderboards for things like getting into orbit using the least amount of fuel and such. Not sure if they've reset the leaderboards yet, there were some leaderboards that were affected by bugs that made the challenge a bit of a joke.

Space Agency is $#!t. It is terribly unrealistic and nowhere near as customizable as Simple Rockets or KSP.
