Guess I'd make one a' these when there's another patch on the way.

Also, here's the old thread(s). Please don't do anything to revive them. Hopefully, they won't be revived.

0.20 Save Debate

PLEASE don't ask for a release date. Legend has it that every time someone asks, the release date is moved back a day.

Let's try and figure out if it will break the saves.

Consider the evidence. New R&D and science dialogue system? Sounds like it'd be pretty deep in the code, so let's hope it doesn't break them.

What about the science lab? It'd be nice to restart, actually, because we will be able to (maybe) do more field lab research to make the data worth more when it's transmitted back.

Is that a Hitchhiker 2x container in the recent dev update from HarvesteR?

These are silly threads. Even the devs won't be certain they won't need to break saves until well into the QA phase.

Exactly. We can make an educated guess, for better or for worse. If we're wrong, we can learn from our mistakes. For science, you monster.

I think you have to separate career-breaking updates from save-breaking updates. They imply very different things, and it seems to me that career-breaking updates are likely to occur far more often than actual save-breaking updates.

I don't worry about it. It's not a finished game, so save-breaking is part of the process. If wiping out my progress leads to a better experience, so be it.

Besides, I start over with a new save every time. If I really feel like it, I might copy over a couple of rockets.

While I fully understand the realities of game development and the need to sometimes break compatibility, I also must say that every time it happens, it absolutely kills my enthusiasm for doing anything more elaborate or long-term than a trip to the Mun and back. Why should I investwaste my time and effort if it's all going to be wiped away?

Completely agree. I did nothing for quite a while in 0.21 because I was waiting for 0.22, and I knew I'd be starting a new save.

Why take a shower if you're just going to get dirty again?

What makes you think everyone takes showers?

Personally, I don't think the next update will break saves. Saves only save states, and from what I have seen not much (or any) new state information is being introduced in 0.23.

Why set a bone if it's just going to get broken again? For that matter, why build a house if you know it's going to collapse one day? Why even bother with anything when entropy will just make your efforts worthless? Enjoy the game while you can is how I look at things.

On the topic of saves, let it come. My save's been around since 0.18, I really need to clean house and start again.

I care mostly about my ships. I can always make another Sandbox or Career save. After all, my .21 save had something along the lines of 12 savegames in it because I couldn't stick with one after stuff went badly wrong. Examples are: Kesslerizing my orbit with actual ships, smashing a shuttle through my station and killing all crew onboard, too many rovers in one location causing massive lag, and Kraken taking a summer visit on Kerbal and blowing up my planes mere minutes after takeoff.
