Distant object support?

Recommended Posts

I know Lazor mod supports boosting the loading range of objects up to 99 km, but is there one that also boosts the loading distance for object mechanics beyond 2.5 or 3 km that it is now?

I ask this specifically because I'm trying to drop parachute probes off the wings of a C-130 analogue, and it's annoying to have to essentially come in at 700 meters at a crawl, drop the probes, and immediately have to start orbiting the drop site before I out-range and the 'it died in a collision with Kerbin' mechanic kicks in.

Any mod/plugin that tweaks that overrides that?

Creating such a mod wouldn't be difficult. All you have to do is pretty much set a bunch of the vessel threshold values to whatever you want. Though i'm kinda worried about unexpected side effects... you know, like using a less detailed ground model for collision detection might in the end destroy you vessel as well

If it is possible and no one has done it, I should probably go make a request. Just need something that would allow me to set that distance variable so that things within like... 20 km are still fully loaded. It opens up all kinds of in-atmosphere options. Such as the probes I'm trying to deploy on the fly around Kerbin.

And even then, we could experiment with the distance values to test things like parachute returns on SRBs. (Which in the future might be good to have worked out when career mode starts charging money for rockets, and you save on recovered parts.)

Also LAZOR includes this functionality.

Not quite. Lazors provides object recognition loading up to 99 km, but if you're not within ~2.5 km of a vessel when it touches down, it gets deleted as 'debris', even if it's a probe. The neverunload plugin forces the items with it active to load up to a user-specified distance with full physics and systems active as if you were right there next to it.

The only problem I've found with these is the terrain collision mesh seems to have a limit of around 18 km. Anything touching down there clips right through the terrain and falls to sea level, where it gets destroyed in a hard splashdown. I reported that to the mod's thread already.
