Choose direction on runway

Just setting off on a rescue mission or two after the beginning of a COMPLETELY SUCCESSFUL space program, and it's just hit me how nice it would be to be able to choose which end of the runway I start at.

A crossways runway. In other words, a runway where you can take off going North, South, West, or East.

I guess you don't have to waste that time and fuel doing the turn, especially if its a large plane, it'd take forever because it'd probably have low manoeuvrability.

IRL it's the wind that decides where you point your plane when taking off. If there's no wind, then there's the ATC guy telling you where to take-off from based on your flight plan. Since we don't have any of those things yet (I expect wind at least), then I'm all in for this.

If your plane can't make a simple turn like that it's your design that's flawed. Not the direction you take off in.

I've build truly massive planes and each and every one of them was more than capable of making a turn like that. Agreed, some did it a bit easier that others but they ALL could.

That is an excellent idea. You would probably have to scoot the runway over a little if you wanted to take off south.

They should start you in front of the hangar and make you taxi to the runway. (But they should implement steerable landing gear first!)
