I never really "got" gravity assists...

I wonder if it would be possible to map out a free return Jool tour that brings you down into low orbit of everything and then flings you back to Kerbin for areobraking with a trivial amount of delta-v for fine adjustment.
Definitely not everything. I could see easily hitting Laythe on the way through, though. It's got a relatively large SOI. Maybe Tylo if you're lucky. The others are basically minmus sized or smaller, though, and require a bit of work to get close to, even when you're staying within the Joolian system, let alone when you're passing through at high relative speed.

Oh, I think I am going to try gravity assists in my career mode. There's a window to Moho in 2 days and I hope to be able to use at least Mun, if not Minmus too, to save some fuel.

Quicksave is a friend there and I am sure that I need more than one try to get it right.

How do you know when a window to another planet will be open? I've been unsure on how to know for a very long time!

Mun is an easy one to use, but be careful you note what direction you're leaving the Kerbin system in. You'll want to pass the mun at different points on its orbit depending on whether you're headed in-system or out. Zoom out and check your projected orbit around Kerbol before finalizing your plans.

Also, it's probably not worth the effort to use Minmus, and especially not try using Mun *and* Minmus. Minmus is too small for a good gravity assist, and its eccentric inclination will make other planetary rendezvous possibly more difficult.

There are a few mods that will tell you in game when one is comming up, or you can calculate it yourself based on the angle of the planet and Kerbin.

A of the mods are Kerbal Alarm Clock and Protractor.

Mechjeb also has a mode to plot a transfer to another planet, and that plots the manouvernode at the next window automaticly, even if it's 200 days in the future (I do not recommend trying to warp 200 days in Low Kerbin Orbit at 50x)

Or memorise them, like me.

Kerbin to:Moho=~245 degrees

Eve. = 47.65 degrees

Duna= 51.43 degrees

Dres= 73 degrees

Jool= 91.3 degrees

God, I need to get out more, or just memorise more.

Duna to kerbin, 60 degrees.

Jool to Moho, 135 degrees

:confused:

Did you memorise it by looking it up all the time and sending alot of ships out ot other planets, or did you just sit down one day and deceide to learn it?

Try doing a laythe assist, then Vall, laythe again, then tylo, then laythe, then Vall and then blooming BOP, and then tylo impact

Make a miscalculation and get a Jool meteor right before that slingshot to bop and you have my first Jool trip.

Ok, you memorized the angles. Now, which ones Kerbin has to be ahead of the destination and which ones it has to be behind?

It is absolutely possible to get low flybys of everything and sling back to Kerbin. For my "grand tour" I landed on Pol and Bop which cost quite a bit, but if you never capture, you should be able to hit everything for very low delta-v.

It's KerbalAlarmClock in my case. This one gives me a nice countdown. Very useful when you have more than mission running. The settings are a bit overwhelming at first, but it's really easy to use. Makes you never loose an important maneuver again.

I had calculated the angles too, together with a bunch of other things for rendezvous and satellite deployment. All in a nice table calculation sheet.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I'll try it and post some pictures afterwards (but it could take some time).

Yes, having aspergers is quite useful at times. I.e pi=3.14159265358979323238462634338327.

I can do better:

pi=3,14159265358979323846264338327950288519716939917510582097494459230781640628628089986280248253421170679814808651328230664709384460955058223172535940812864462294895493038194428810975665933446128475648233786783165271201909145648566923460348610

Yes, I'm learning the digit of pi(201(3 is included) so far) for fun...

(I have no life :P)
