Intergalactic travel

I know it's a bit early to discuss this when we don't even have other stars. Especially since we don't have a complete solar system. But I was thinking something like this could be used: You have to go to all of the planets and moons in the game, even in other solar systems, and find 2 monoliths on each except gas giants, so don't look for monoliths on them. Then, a secret node in the tech tree could be revealed. The node would be like, "Stargates" and the description would say, "And by stargates, we mean wormholes taking us to other galaxies," which you would have to discover by having a space telescope in orbit around the farthest planet from the farthest star from Kerbol. Here are some ideas:

Large Kerballanic Cloud: LMC analogue

Small Kerballanic Cloud: SMC analogue

Kerbdromeda: Andromeda analogue

Kerbangulum: Triangulum analogue

KC 1101: IC 1101 analogue, if you go to the center, there is a black hole which will teleport you to Kerbin, so you can return your millions of science points home.

A proper discussion topic generally actually has something to discuss. The wording of the OP comes across as "you know, this would be cool..." which is pretty much basically a suggestion. If you have something you want to discuss about it, usually one has a fair idea of one or more specific points that are useful for discussion. In the past, common points for discussion topics have been "do we need this", "how hard would something like this be to implement", "how useful would something like this be", "can we improve upon this idea, and if so how" and so forth.

I won't lock this yet, but if you're just putting an idea up, it is basically just a suggestion. Since it's on the [thread=36863]What Not to Suggest List[/thread], you can be sure it's not a new or unknown idea, and as such you posted a discussion topic instead... but without any real topic of discussion raised. I'd recommend you find something to actually discuss about it, otherwise there will inevitably be a great flood of people saying this idea is common as all hell and is also on the WNTS list, and eventually a moderator will come along and lock it before it comes to blows.

Make it a super-secret ending, like getting to the Galactic Core in Spore. This way, it won't count as another place to explore, but simply as an achievement you could do in Kerbal Space Program. Probably with massive rewards to prestige and budget in career mode.

Actually, I prefer adding of new game aspects into existing solar system (economics, resources, life support, communication networks, etc) instead of expanding game's universe extensively. Adding new planets worth nothing if you have nothing to do on them like you don't have now on Mun and other planets.

(Actually I mean, didn't have before science).

Considering the fact that Squad tries to stay close to reality (what, I think, most players of KSP like) and in reality even the manned travel to one of our next stellar neighbors is an endeavor, that might take decades of travel (and High tech that still is still a long way off), I don´t think that travel between galaxies will (or should) ever be implemented

Intergalactic is too much;

But interstellar, why not?

But before even thinking all this, we need a proper running game as it is, I think interstellar stuff would appear as a DLC/expansion rather than the updates we see, it's best to focus on what's happening right now, the current solar system needs to be finished, career mode needs to be polished up and ready, after that, it's just a matter of adding new solar systems (I wouldn't expect alot, 10 at the grand maximum), adding new late-tech stock parts for getting to other solar systems, and then adding the career missions & science and research.

But intergalactic is way too much, even if scaled down. Perhaps galaxies could show in the skybox background as decoration, reminding us of IRL galaxies, with a slight little kerbal-ish difference.

There is no reason to expand beyond the current solar system when it is as sparse as it currently is. IRL we could spend an eternity exploring our own system and still be scratching at the surface.

It would be cool to be able to explore the next closest system eventually, however anything beyond that and we'll require warp drives and other such nonsense, and the vast distances would still require absurd levels of time compression.

Let's just focus on improving the current system.

My personal opinion is, that we don't need such large (far) locations, as it is now at 0.22 its good for improvements of system, gameplay, features rather, than the adding more "empty" (mean nothing else than the similar as we have) locations. Look at it as time needed for adding any feature directed to this, or something new.. (as bowl diagram shown in some idea-planned development video). If you are that hardcore player and you can flight almost anything to anywhere in few days, you have keep on mind that the others (i suppose that is majority of players) aren't that good (fast...) and will welcome new features for actual (closer) kerbal space more, than the another galaxy (full of same or similar features) behind the corner they never been...

Interstellar travel is an awesome idea, but I personally wouldn't hold my breath for it, especially not before release.

The main obstacles I see to getting other solar systems in game would be things to do there and a way to get there that didn't break interplanetary travel.

  • 4 weeks later...

For intergalactic travel, I think the best thing to do would be to:

1. Use the gravity of all of the planets to get yourself out of the solar system.

2. Use the gravity of other stars and their planets to fling you into intergalactic space.

3. Once you arrive, use the stars to slow you down into orbit around the galaxy.

4. Establish a colony!

By the time you go interstellar, interplanetary travel will be routine anyways.
