Delta-v for Joolian grand tour

Recommended Posts

I'm curious if there's some approximate figure for the total delta-v needed to visit all of Jool's moon's--at least encountering all of them for science purposes.

I'm hoping to design a large probe to visit the Jool system, with a "mothership" to orbit and map each of the moons, and dispatch separate small landing probes to each, as well (except maybe Tylo, given its gravity). Has anyone done something similar?

I was able to get a science probe to intercept (and occasionally aerobrake into, for assist maneuvers) all of Jool's moons except Bop with only around 1.3k dV (starting right after Jool aerocapture). I'm not the best player so I imagine a skilled pilot could do all of them (including Bop) in maybe 800 dV, perhaps even less, by carefully using the moons to slingshot himself around the system. That was flyby only, no landings.

(specifically, the probe had 3.6k dV to start with, spent 1.6k on part of the transfer and ejected from the system with 700 dV left in a failed attempt to transfer back to Kerbin)

My old grand tour has some data.

http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/48461-Grand-tour-4-new-attempt-at-an-below-100-ton-grand-tour/page2

From low Laythe to low Vall cost me 750 m/s to get where including adjustments and 293 to circulate.

From low Vall to 100 km Tylo orbit was 525 m/s transfeer and 860 m/s circulate

Tylo and outward

Stage I used 754 m/s + 539 m/s plane change and 289 m/s to circulate at Bop

Stage 2 used 770 m/s + 13 m/s plane change and adjust + 296 to circulate at Pol.

Pol to Bop was 88 m/s, 169 m/s plane change and 153 m/s circulate
