Crazy detours

What crazy things have you done to get a design to work?

Post it below!

Mine:

I once tried building a rocket with a fairing covered fuselage inside but when the cover tried engulfing the lower half of my ship, I ended up building it in two segments and docking them on the launchpad with hackgravity and THEN legitly taking off :D

In order to fit side boosters onto my Shuttle, I had to move the wings ont the bottom of the fuselage.

This then moved the center of mass too far down for the oms engines to actually not flip the craft. Also, the bottom attached wings would make this somewhat less stable in atmo. To fix this, I made the wings sweep up. This did not quite fix the CoM issue quite enough, so I put a ridiculously long verticle stabilizer on the bad boy. I've grown fond of the large tailfin now, though.

I once took a Jool assist to Duna.

Completely accidentally, of course.

(Still counts as a detour!)

I had a laugh at that, because last night, when trying to fix a slight mistake and get myself an encounter with Duna, I ended up going to Pol instead.

During grand tour 4, I found I was running short of fuel going from Eve to Duna, so I had to drop parts of my rocket early.

The uppermost engine and fuel is suposed to be dumped at duna, the center part go directly to Jool with the lowermost part go on to Ike and Dress before Jool.

But I had to drop the upper part during the burn dfIPfPs.png

Still made it to Duna. but could not keep full trust all the time

Built a Wackjob design using those cranky SRBs from the demo and a probe can for control with a reaction wheel and battery pack as payload. Believe it or not, with proper braces, this thing made Kerbal escape on its way to low solar orbit.

It actually flew with no rotation, tipping, or blowing up.
