Mutiny in orbit!

[this is my 3 latest days of gameplay - things ended up quite fun and interesting for me anyway, I just made it up as I went, hope you enjoy]

This is spacestation Fat Bird I, pride of the Kerbal nation. Inside are 1 brave pilot and 8 of the best scientists the kerbals could find for this brave mission. All is well...

...until the shocking truth is revealed! The scientists are in fact evil masterminds, with evil mastermindesque plans! They radio Kerbal Space Centre and advise that they have taken Jeb, the pilot, as hostage and intend to bomb KSC from orbit! Oh no!

This is unacceptable, such mutiny cannot be allowed. Quickly the engineers put together Avenger I, a Space Superiority Fighter with a Highly Advanced Space Torpedo . The fact that the torpedo highly resembles a single SRB with a probe body and some separation engines is entirely coincidential. It's high tech, people.

Bill Kernan hops into the cockpit of this spearhead of kerbal engineering and flies towards the skies to save his friend and show the evildoers who is the boss.

Bill lines up for the shot and releases the torpedo, readying it for remote launch. He is fairly sure Jeb will be safe in the cockpit, as long as he fires the torpedo accurately. Have we mentioned this is the first test launch of the Highly Advanced Space Torpedo? Bill assures it really is okay, he knows what he is doing and he once read about submarines anyway, so clearly he is an expert on torpedoes.

Fire!

The carnage is horrendous. Four of the 8 evil masterminds quickly find out that trying to take Jeb hostage is a bad idea...Bill has a strict policy on hostages/prisoners: he takes none.

2013-12-05_00014.jpg

Bill is slightly worried about Jeb's fate, considering most of the immediate vacuum around his ship is filled with shattered metal, plastic, glass and what appears to be small, local clouds of greenish mist. After a short search he lets out a sigh of relief, though - the cockpit where Jeb was imprisoned is peacefully floating about a couple of kilometers away. Bill swiftly rescues his friend!

Bill and Jeb return home, hoping that the others didn't eat all the snacks while they were busy introducing the bad guys to vacuum.

Back in the base, the boys are starting to wonder about the other four rebel scientists. Sure, they are a bit evil...but as far as Bill and Jeb are aware, they are still alive inside the wreckage of the stricken spacestation...and that's a bit cruel. Perhaps they should rescue them and bring them home to face trial.

2013-12-05_00015.jpg

An ordinary EVA rescue operation is out of the question, though - it is possible that the mutineers are armed. They may even have trapped the hatches with explosives! No, there has to be another way.

Enter Sybilla.

2013-12-05_00032.jpg

A design put together in a couple of hours, Jeb and Bill are certain that this specialized rescue ship is a surefire way to bring the mutineers safely back to Kerbin. What could possibly go wrong!

2013-12-05_00037.jpg

Jeb did briefly consider the possibility that having a few tons of space station bouncing about unattached may cause some stability issues on reentry...but he quickly dismissed such thoughts as nonsense.

Once our brave friends had successfully captured the mutineer ship wreckage in the teeth of Sybilla, they proceeded to retro burn to return to Kerbin (much to the dismay of the spacestation solar panels and other less sturdy parts).

Things got rather steamy and spinny once the atmosphere realised they were coming in hot.

However, much to everyone's surprise, the retro engines managed to break the fall sufficiently.

Kerbal military police quickly proceeded to capture the mutineers, offer them some snacks and tell them in strict terms not to do that again ok.

I kept the rescue ship spinning around its long axis to keep the station core pinned to one side rather than bounce around. It worked, however the spinning started getting a bit out of control in the atmosphere with the aerodynamic parts catching wind asymmetrically. It also meant the center of mass was off to one side... but in the end it didn't matter. :)
