Texture Issues

Recommended Posts

I made a launch escape tower in Blender and I\'m having issues with the texture.

Blender Render:

As you can see, many of the faces aren\'t showing up. In addition, the nozzles and the capsule shield don\'t show up at all. My texture is just a solid grey image.

I\'m probably doing something wrong somewhere along the way because I have this problem on another model I made previously. Anyone have any idea what I\'m doing wrong?

Sorry for the big images.

I forgot to add that this is only the second model I\'ve ever made in Blender so there is a lot I don\'t know how to do. How do I rebuild normals?

First of all, from edit mode hit 'N' to bring up the properties panel, and scroll down the list to find: Normals, Face and check that. It will enable blue lines on all faces, which show which 'side' of each polygon will be visible (since it reflects light) with the other side being transparent.

Typically, you\'d want the outside faces to be visible and the interior ones can be inviisble since you can\'t see them, but in fringe cases like an engine bell, you need both sides to be invisible - for that case you need to highlight the engine bell or whatever and Duplicate it, and then reverse their normals so their inside face is visible (and then scale it down slightly so it fits 'inside' the other object a bit)

In your case, only some of your normals are wrong, so if Recalculate doesn\'t work you may need to do it manually. You can see which blue lines are pointed the wrong way, those are the invisible panels ingame.

To Recalc or flip, on the Edit menu scroll down to Normals, you\'ll find both buttons. If Recalc doesn\'t make the troubled lines point right, highlight them and hit flip, and you\'ll see the line swap to the other side.

A trick is to highlight all (hit A) and then flip ALL normals - then only the bad ones will be left pointing 'out' - fix those and then re-highlight them all and flip them again to set them back correctly.

Then once you do that you can add a 2nd surface inside your bell or shields if needed.

Thanks. That fixed most of the issues. However, the capsule shield and the nozzles still aren\'t showing up. I noticed that in blender these are black and I\'m not sure if there is any correlation there or what it means.

An easier way: in Edit mode select all the faces you want to make \'double-sided\', then Mesh->Faces->Solidify. You can even set walls thickness in the Tools panel.

Didn\'t know that. Cool stuff. Thanks Tosh!

You need to make those all one part when you are done. You can do that by selecting them in object mode and pressing 'join' on the left panel also 'cntrl-j'. You only need 2 objects for a SRB. The main model and the collision mesh.

Also you should set the shading to smooth before you export. That way those hard edges wont be noticeable.
