Minmus Biomes - Lesser Flats?

Recommended Posts

So, after 0.23 release I've sent a mobile lab to Minmus to strip all the Science from that little mint-colored ball.

According to the wiki and forum, there is 8 biomes. I've located 7 so far - all that left is Lesser Flats.

So my question is - where is it? "Flats" refers to "frozen lakes", as I understand - so I've landed at the biggest one and got Greater Flats, drove to smaller one and got Flats. Drove to smallest one... and got Flats again.

There's actually nine biomes, four of which are various flats. Flats, Lesser Flats, Great Flats, and Greater Flats. On top of that, you have Highlands, Midlands, Lowlands, Slopes, and Poles.

Personally, until someone throws up a color coded map, I'd suggest using ScanSat to map Minmus. Some people have posted the resulting map, but it's not as useful as you'd think as it's not really color coded, it just looks like it might be. You have to mouse over each of the areas in game for it to tell you what the biome actually is.

OK, I'm going to apologize in advance for the eye-bursting colors, the incomplete status, and any errors, this is me manually filling in between the lines on a map. Consider the garish colors encouragement to prove that you can do better. And yes, any complaints will get that response.

The very light gray is the Slopes biome for the most part, the dark gray is stuff that I didn't get around to finishing yet. The south pole is a mess of a lot of different biomes according to ScanSat, and I don't think they should be there.

OK, had never used Paint.NET before, and just figured out what global mode does on paint filling. Expect a much better version of this up tomorrow.

EDIT: Stayed up too late changed it to something more accurate and a little less eye-bursting.

As Eric's map shows, the Lesser Flats are on the opposite side of Minmus from the Greater Flats, with the Great Flats in between.

Eric, that map needs posted to the wiki as there isn't a Minmus biome map there. Or at least there wasn't a couple of days ago.

Please, put all such relevant information here where it can be compiled into one post useful for everyone.

http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/53567-List-of-places-and-biomes-in-v0-22-%28Kerbal-planetary-geology-and-geography%29

I did so as soon as I had something I wasn't embarrassed to show.

I assumed that after I posted that to the geography thread, it would find it's way anywhere that it was useful. I may get around to doing this myself at some point, but if anyone beats me to it, I won't complain. I already had this information from ScanSat for my own use, I did this to be helpful, and seeing how it's just a recoloring of a ScanSat map with a legend attached, it's not like it's valuable intellectual property that I'm going to fight over control for, so I give permission for reuse of this for any purpose other than shaming or terrorism (and if you figure out a way to use this map for terrorism using anything other than stenography, I'd like to know). :-)

The biomes on Minmus aren't very intuitive. I found that at the base of an extremely shallow slope practically on the greater flats was considered the midlands, while much higher up at the top of a nearby cliff was considered the lowlands. Some dark material on the surface near this cliff/plateau and in a recessed area was midlands. I found some highlands and it wasn't all that high. So far the only soil sample I've taken on Minmus that made sense by location was greater flats.
