I recently (after some 400 hours of gameplay, can't see a forest for all the tree's) - I recently noticed that my engines gave off some micro-vibrations during accent after launch and my question is: Does this in any way impede or alter the characteristics of my engines as they burn? (I am of cause talking meta-gameplay here).

Not at all. this is caused mainly by osscilations in your ascent vehicle if you are using SAS. because of how the joints are computed if your engine is producing too much thrust and you have SAS on then the SAS system is trying to maintain your heading, while your engine continue in the new direction, this can cause joint sliding and possible unplanned disassembly.

I think he's talking about engine gimbal, when the engine turns slightly to aid in turning.

Yep, it may be gimbals. If problem is with initial ascent stages - try switching off their gimbals, it may may ascent a bit more stable (it won't help to carry up 100-ton monster truck without wobble though ).
