[WIP] MSI's Infernal Robotics - Model Rework (v02 Pre-Release Beta)

Lockable steering won't effect how they function as robotic Athlete parts and will allow greater use, and there is a lack of anything similar...
That was my thinking too, since these are not intended to replace stock wheels.
... and certainly nothing that scales out of the box like I'm hoping those will, but I don't mind. Just make sure they have brakes :) They look good.

I'm not sure tweakscaling works with wheels. Anyway, I've got ideas for how I want a larger and smaller set to look :)

Unlike normal wheels, these won't have steering of their own, meaning you'll have to use rotatrons to direct them. Speak up now if you think this is a bad idea.

I'll be very happy to finally have stack-attaching wheels, but I'd be even happier if I could drive normally instead of using IR for steering.

Noted, I'll see what I can devise. The steering range will probably be quite limited as the main intention is for the wheels to be used with IR, but I agree that it shouldn't be mandatory.

do you plan to convert also the gantry to the new models? The original ones are not really useful and always hard to tell which part will move and how to attach things. At least for me.

And a "off-switch" would be nice on the parts. So you can have multiple groups with same name but only the active ones move.

It's not a visible switch, but you can right-click and lock all the controllable parts. I've used that for an extendable arm using complementary hinges to keep the end steady while moving the whole arm out. Sometimes, though, I needed to just move one of the hinges.

Yep, got a few ideas in mind for what to do. Hopefully the arrow markers that are on all the rework parts will resolve that issue when applied to the gantries.

The things I have made with these parts and the new tweakable IR system are almost unbearably sexy to watch. Thank you Zodius and sirkut. <3

Please show us. I always like to see what people have come up with using the rework parts, especially with the recent pistons :)

Okay so here's something a made to fit a couple of SCANSAT modules neatly into a small compartment: http://imgur.com/a/ck5vi

And here's something I made to deliver two large, heavy Station Science cyclotrons to my orbital research facility without having to do two launches. It'll get the module lined up with the docking port, then disconnect the upper clamp (robostruts) and carefully ease it in. http://imgur.com/a/WAvw9

Because the upper section is only 3.75m while the bottom is 5m, the large pistons wouldn't have fit neatly into the fairing at the top, so it took a bit of experimenting with two stacked smaller pistons (which did fit) before I got them moving in synchrony with the lower pistons. The Tweakable settings were spectacular for this - it let me experiment on the ground, without having to swap back and forth to the VAB.

Nice. Very impressive. I would love to see the other gallery but it appears to be the same link. Thank you so much for sharing!

Yay! Someone who actually uses the IR struts! Is that the large or small version, can't tell.

Can we expect a .24 release with part cost balancing any time soon? Although the current costs aren't too unreasonable. Actually I'm not sure if anything needs to be changed, but I'm curious if I should keep checking back here with frequency if an update is coming soon.

Apparently not. 0.24 and 64 bit shouldn't change anything for the rework parts themselves other than giving the prices meaning. It's the plugins, especially Infernal Robotic's custom TweakScale, that need to be updated. It sounds like KSP 64 bit for Windows isn't particularly stable even on it's own, which makes it that much harder for plugin writers to update them.

No longer supported, and will break recent versions of IR-Rework. ZodiusInfuser updated the parts, so this is no longer necessary.

Here's a Module Manager patch (cfg) (zip) to update these parts for KSP 0.24 and Infernal Robotics 0.18+. Just drop it anywhere in your GameData folder.

It does the following with these parts (and also the Station Parts):

  • Increases the masses of scaled-down parts to bring proportions in line with Legacy IR parts (large size parts remain the same) [v 0.1]
  • Changes mass descriptors to work with the version of TweakScale in IR 0.18 [v 0.2]
  • Changes translation range and speed descriptors for IR 0.18 [v 0.2]
  • Places the station parts in the tech tree alongside the rework parts [v 0.2c]

It does not:

  • Fix in-flight crafts (crafts with only size Large parts should be functionally unaffected)
  • Fix already saved crafts (same, but replace the parts anyway )
  • Make any attempt at price balancing

I haven't tested every part, so please report any errors or improvements to me. Also, I won't be surprised if ZodiusInfuser makes different updates, especially to the masses Stackable Extendatrons (edit: yup, different changes). I based those on the extendable pistons.

Do whatever you want with the patch. That should probably include playing KSP.

version 0.3:

  • fixes Right & Stackable Extendatrons' masses (thanks to ZodiusInfuser)
  • fixes Station Parts scaling

version 0.2c: places Station Parts in Advanced Metalworks

version 0.2: update to IR 0.17 and add Station Parts

version 0.1: unreleased

love the parts, couple of things though...

the Servo config in the VAB could do with being a tad wider just so it doesn't try and scroll sideways (see pic below).

how does one use the "uncontrolled" parts?

Is there a download for the parts shown in this video (my main reason for wanting this mod)

I believe sirkut's planning on making the window user-adjustable, but that will take a full rewrite of the user interface.

As for the uncontrolled parts, they are exactly that: uncontrolled. They're useful for building things like helicopters, rotating spacestations, and trebuchets. Possibly all at once.

The parts in the video are called Foldatrons and ZodiusInfuser is waiting to release them until the wheels that fit with them are sorted out.
