Today I build a Rocket

Close but no cigar. This should have put 50-60 T to orbit (250-300 points) as a Hard Entry :(

LOL at not checking the spacing sooner.

This is a complete rebuild as the central beam of the roller is too low to support legs on the beams of the rockets mobile tower hence the reason why i ended up using wheals under the rocket parts.

This dose bring up a valid scoring concern though. It would seam to me that there's not much point in doing anything other than launching the largest payload. Returning from the moon should be worth a lot more than a large payload launch. The only thing i can think of though would be multiples of the payload points as achievements. Hummm or even easier would be to remove the 5 points per tone multiplier.

I do have one more thought for the night. A Supper Hard version where your not aloud to use struts.

Well, I'm just wiping the sweat off my joystick :P. In the spirit of the challenge I decided to build another rocket only this time I did it all in one continuous take, no quick-saving or loading, and by god was it hard! I didn't help matters by almost dropping the second stage off the rocket and forgetting to fill a fuel dump, but somehow it came together.

I think I'm going to quit while I'm ahead and admire my handy-work with a cold beverage in hand. Tomorrow we launch, destination: Jool (hopefully), video of the mission to follow... wish me luck! :)

Awesome i look forward to you video.

May your flight go off with no unexpected fire.

Im still trying to build a supper hard no strut version of my 1st rocket.

Iv been having a play with flying constructors some more too. No problem with landing on the VAB but without a joystick docking is still a but too tricky. Its making me think i should dust off my copy of MonoDev and build a quick addon. With tweakables it shouldn't be too hard to make a zero climb jet stabilization autopilot. As in you get to keep your throttle at full and the AP just adjusts the tweakable thrust level to balance the force of gravity and then you use hot keys with 2 other sets of rockets for adjusting your vertical speed. After removing the complexity of watching vertical speed and adjusting throttle using keys whilst watching thrust levels from the jets i might just have enough skill left to complete a dock.

Cupcake, do you mind if I ask what joystick you use? I've been in the market for one and am not really able to find a decent one to replace my old (and no longer working) force-feedback unit.

That's not a bad idea. Another way to get round it is to use rockets and jets together to cancel out the throttle lag. Saying that I've got a feeling that without analogue controls it's gonna be a stuggle whatever you do. :(

Hi Raven,

I use a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro which is a pretty good stick for the price, I think Squad were just given a whole box full of them, maybe if you ask them nicely. :wink: I've still got a lovely force feedback joystick, again by Logitech but sadly it's impossible to get drivers for it anymore. ;.;

Just while I'm here here's my official challenge entry, I'm afraid I've still gotta tally up the score, but I'll try and get that done when I get home tonight. Enjoy! :D

OMG, I LOVE this idea! I will have time only next week but I will definitely try this (at home)! :D

Go for it! I must say it's really cool seeing all the different ways people have tackled the challenge. Big thankyou to Captain Sierra for putting it all together! :D

This seems like a great challenge. I'll hopefully get my entry up this weekend. First I've got to build a VTOL*, then learn to fly said vehicle.

*Rovers hate me.

Lets see, I hope I've done this right... :)

Difficulty : Medium - 2 Stage Rocket + Drop Tank - Hyperedit Used To Fuel Tanks Before Liftoff

Total Payload To Stable Kerbin Orbit : 1 Tadpole Dropship 4.3t Discounting Fuel = 21.5
Escaping Kerbin SOI = 50
Jool Flyby + Stable Orbit = 55
Pol Flyby/Landing = 30
Tylo Flyby = 15

Total : 171.5

Yeah i use ascent and descent rockets with hot key toggles. The Im_A_Cupcake_Wanabe plugin dose a fair job of stabilizing my craft and then i have a few different methods for exact control. All involve the SAS being locked pointing straight up. Then i ether use RCS or side ways rockets hotkeyed into the keypad for positioning. I use both systems to adjust your crafts angle without changing its SAS lock so that normal SAS dose most of the hard work.

I can happily dock a full half orange tank now but I dont have much vertical build experience yet and have a nasty habit of designing rockets that cant be built when you have the constructor attached to a part :( or even worse suffer from unexpected results due to primary / secondary docking.

So i revert back to ground vehicles for the moment with the Small But Hard.

3.35T to orbit = a Hard score of 16.75

That should be easy to beat but taking the top spot isnt too hard just yet :)

Ill develop the Pinks Ascent Stabilizing System (PNK ASS for short) a fair bit more over the next few weeks and probably start a thread to release it properly. My plan is to enable some more tweakables so that it can work with different engine types and handle variable gravity. It could be very handy for off world Colony construction. Loads of problems to fix and things to understand before itl be truly ready though but thought it might help get some more entry's. Sure theres also crane plugin that would make this a lot easier.

Cool, I'm looking forward to seeing PNK ASS in action, umm... Well, you know what I mean . I'm quite impressed you made it up to 52m/s, that's some fast building, or it would have been anyway! You might want to have a look at this too:

I checked with Captain Sierra and KAS winches and accessories are allowed. :)

But how is "medium" chuck noris?

Sounds awesome:cool:, challenge accepted. One question: could I have a refueling module for my construction vehicle and have it be counted as one construction vehicle (medium or hard mode worthy)?

Do you mean like a fuel dump? I was going to use one of them to refill my VTOL, and I would have done had I remembered to fill it with fuel before hand.

I think K3achas question is the same as mine. If I lift the stage to the Launch pad un fueled but then instead of hacking the fuel in we lift fuel tanks to it and then transfure the fuel accross using docking ports. Dose this count as medium or hard mode? I think this should be medium but it dose feel more legit then hacking the fuel in. If this does count as hard mode I've going to make use of it.

Also my construction vehicle has 2 parts. A base with wheels and a VTOL

part. I spawn the Rocket part on the runway drive up to it. Undock VTOL and fly and dock to the top of the rocket part. then lift the rocket part to the base and drive over to the launch pad on wheels before undocking from the base and lifting the part on to the pad. I hope that this can count as one construction vehicle.

The 0.2V of the PNK A.S.S has been released in the plugins section.

Cool, I'm looking forward to seeing PNK ASS in action, umm...

Iv thrown together a quick demonstration video.

Im still working on my vertical construction methods but its taking me a long time to get it perfect.

I have a new rocket and constructor undergoing testing now and hope to have a new hard entry for viewing soon.

From what I gather, the gist of the video is "Phooey to rockets magically appearing on the pad! I'll build it there with parts that aren't already on the pad! Using a cargo VTOL!"

So basically, the challenge is to put together a rocket manually using another vehicle.

It honestly sounds kind of fun in a way. If I were allowed to use Infernal Robotics in it for instance, I might give it a go (I would use a rover rather then a VTOL to build it, and infernal robotics hinges and extending parts would be necessary to do so with a ground vehicle without redesigning the thing for each added rocket part).

Maybe I'll give it a shot sometime. I could always use more practice with inferal robotics anyway, as I eventually want to make a bipedal walker that moves faster then 2 meters a second. And eventually-eventually, a functional aircraft that transforms into a mecha.

Hi guys,

Captain Sierras asked me to take over the running of this challenge. I do apologise for not giving the thread more time I was just (and still am) pretty busy trying to get a Jool grand tour video done! Anyway, I had a chat to him about some outstanding Qs people had.

(CS) Yes. (Just to add my two cents fuel dumps/modules to refuel the constuction vessel are fine provided they sit immobile outside the SPH.)

(CS) That counts all as one vehicle and is med/hard mode entry allowed.

(CS) Nope. Which means there should probably be some score reward fore kerbals launched and returned.

Infernal robotics eh? This should be fun, can't wait to see it. You can also use KAS if you're so inclined.

As you were. :)

Hears a sneak preview of my current build and latest constructor.

The final craft will be an 11 part monster :) But itl probably take 5 days to get the video made, edited and uploaded.

I think I could build a Supper Heavy Lifter with this system now. It would need a mobile tower if it gets any higher but that would be the smallest of problems compered to solving the use of Mainsails at full throttle with dockingport joints like my new contender dose.
