Rune
...More Duna delivery preparations: [...]I want to see that finished base! I do have a feeling you could do with a bit more variety, though, but I know how hard it is to standardize containers and still keep a unique look for each kind of module, all while keeping mass in check so the delivery system can cope with it.Currently working on a Space Shuttle powered with the new monopropellant engines. Not because it is useful, but because it is cool! It's all stock (except Mechjeb). It goes into orbit and lands just fine. Well, to be honest, I still haven't managed a landing without breaking the engines, that's only due to my lack of piloting experience. The stock cargo bay is operational but still needs some reworking to make it look better. Here are some pictures:http://imgur.com/a/RPSSS#0That's a challenging build! But keep at it, you'll learn lots. Off the top of my head, I would tell you you have too much of the job of going to orbit riding on the orbiter with its poor isp engines. I would increase the size of the ET and beef up the main engines on the orbiter to compensate (mine are pairs of a LVT-30+LV-909 clipped together, much more thrust than LVT-45's). At the same time, take a lot of the monopropellant in the orbiter out: you will have less work to do to put it in orbit, and the ET will do a bigger part of it. But of course, that comes from having built my own version, YMMV and you might have another direction for your build. Mine, BTW, already has its modded bay installed, and right now I'm seeing whether or not that leading edge wings do something... my guess is not really, and I can take them out and clean up the bay).hrm Jupiter232 ... very interesting concept of a Mun mission ... http://i.imgur.com/GxwK2Cg.jpgIt looks good, but I doubt you can make do with just LV-T45s on the core... I foresee that size is a job for, at least, skippers, if you just put three engines. But I think you could make them fit... or add a clipped aerospike to each or something.Rune. Just like the real thing, my shuttle also recovers half of it's √86,000 cost upon returning to the runway: so it saves money while still costing more than the alternatives! But you could indeed save a lot of fuel routing headaches with the LRB and its twin nozzle (not to mention the stupendous T/W), and using skippers for the upper stage, two would definitely fit in there, reduce part count, simplify fuel routing, and look like bigger vacuum bells. Of course, that would make the nozzles on the first stage look smaller... you know what? I'll leave you to it, and praise when you post the results! Rune. I've always liked the Skipper, yet I never end up using them. Well, except as F-1 equivalent.

Actually, I found weird the fact that I needed so much fuel in my orbiter whereas similar designs needed so few. I manage to reach 70+km apoapsis with the fuel from the ET but the orbiter then has a huge task circularizing the orbit.Trying to follow your advice, I removed most of the monopropellant so I could double the size of the bay! There's also a huge gain concerning the weight (lost more than 1/3rd). I'll keep working on it when I have some more time. It looks very promising now! 'Just slap it on the top of your rocket or hang it on the outside of your shuttle..'Funny you should say that, have you read this week's dev notes? The intern is working on "the MK parts". If I had to throw in my two cents, I'd say at some point, probably coincident with the new aerodynamic model (that has been talked about since before I bought the game), a big update focused on spaceplanes will rebalance everything and add the bits that we are all waiting for, and a couple we didn't think about but will become totally essential in short order. Like, I don't know, stock robotics or something. Notice I AM totally speaking out of my ass, but it would be consistent with the available info. Spaceplane parts haven't had a change since they were introduced, and back then the aerodynamic model was kind of a hack by C7 before he became dev!Rune. Until then, most of the concerns with planes are quite well covered by mods (Ferram, B9, Spaceplane Plus...).
Thoendi
I have been working quite a bit on that shuttle, following Rune's advice and (I admit) borrowing some ideas here and there from several great designs on these forums. It turned out really great, I really like it. The cargo bay is twice as big, the orbiter lighter and the whole thing more stable (thanks to those new verniers engines). Max payload weight is somewhere around 2 tons. Part count is 180ish without payload and can definitely be improved.Still some fine tuning to do, such as the separation procedures of the boosters, the external tank and the disposable cargo doors that are not so ... reliable, let's say. And the landing is a mess, it ends up most of the time in a pile of debris and the kerbals smiling in the cockpit. I am really considering a parachute landing! Here is the album:Javascript is disabled. View full album

And don't ever worry about the "borrowing": if someone doen't want yo to pilfer their design as you want to, to learn how it was done or just because you want to... well, he shouldn't post them here, because that's what this forum is for! Giggleplex777
You should redesign the tail a bit so that it matches the height of the cockpit. Then, maybe a cargo bay door? Speaking of Space Shuttles, I have built an updated Odysseus that is compatible with 0.24. I'll be leaving for vacation tomorrow and I won't be able to play KSP until the 15th. I'm planning on building a 2.5m diameter payload bay shuttle then. Edited July 25, 2014 by Giggleplex777
