Reentry is surprisingly easy. The heat model is very forgiving. I love the way planes fly now! I am finding it very easy to fly though, maybe too much built in stabilization maybe, but its great either way.

Yeah... form my limited testing before I go to sleep for today, the K-Prize will have to wait a bit. Either I got something wrong, messed up the difficulty level somehow, or I found some conductivity bug with surface attachment. So far I'm counting about 10 reentry tries, none of those survived, and this was with a fairly decent reentry path (70kmx20km). I keep >2km/s until I am under 30kms and burn up there, or I soak enough to heat the rear NCS adapters before I drop below 40kms, and incidentally, those are structurally crucial.

Sadly air hogging no longer helps you it seems, jet engines cut out above 20km and you drop back down now

Yeah... not the issue here. I learned to make SSTOs with basic jets and 1:1 intake ratios long ago. The thing is, on my first one, the thermal system is baffling me. Surely it's not meant to be as difficult? I mean, in the streams everybody can make their stuff drop flaming like hell, and I can't seem to get any glowy warning, or a decent hypersonic glide at 50kms, without stuff going very, very wrong, very, very quickly.

Rune. Sadly, further experimentation with other crafts will have to wait, because I am stealing hours of sleep from myself.

I used to like making my air intake 22:1 ratio, would allow you to use jet engines all the way up to 67ishkm if you knew how to baby the throttle, i do not think that will be possible with the new aero model, maybe time will tell more experimenting is needed

No pictures, but I must say, the A.I.R.B.R.A.K.E.S. are really OP. Rune, I made a clone of your ship, threw some of those on it, and it reentered the atmosphere without a hitch. Heck, you can even use those things to cut your speed for landings! They're really quite amazing.

Yeah, my issue were the NCS adapters clipping into the engines, the suckers were pulling all the heat in the ship to themselves, and they were structurally crucial (beware of clipping!). Replaced them with something that didn't clip the engines as much, and poof, problem solved.

Same, currently trying to salvage the last 3 planes I built. First one is going through an awesome upgrade.

Though 1.0 is really great update, I'm sad a little, coz i should rebuilt all of my planes and rockets :( No one of them fly properly now..

My only replica that survived is the yf-12, f-22 etc are all dead it's so sad hours and hours wasted XD But this is a price i can spend for the new aerodinamic model and all the new stuffs... still i don't like the new mk1 inline cockpit.

Idk what im doing wrong with my SSTO... does just under mach 1 below 1km but it gets to 10km and just loses all its power and drops from the sky, i tried adding more intakes but nope not having a bar of it... has a cooler for each engine as well, is it simply a more power issue maybe..? using 2 tubo jets and 2 rapiers, 4 rapiers did not work and i really dont want to give up my nuke.

Its made most frustrating by the fact that this plane in 0.90 would go to the mun then minmus and come back to kerbin without refueling if i loaded it in there right now...

Trying to build a Valkyrie Shuttle replica. The result? thing doesn't lift off without the main engines firing.;.;;.;

Can someone help? I fail at making SSTO's. The only one that works breaks up on reentry thanks to empty tanks and FAR :mad:

From what I've found, drag is absolutely killer now. TWR doesn't seem to be as important as drag ratios... and intakes seen to be the biggest suspects.

I haven't managed to keep jets running above 30k just due to air deprivation. RIP airhogging.

It seems rapiers are better than turbo jets at high altitude i have just discovered, no point using turbo jets on SSTO's anymore :(

at least i think.. i might still be wrong

So, I thought:

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. What now? Maybe I should say hi to Laythe!

I started building "drop pods" that are fairings, heatsheilds and airbrakes. After getting down low, the faring, sheild and airbrakes seperate and the new colony modules parachute down safely. The first desine is good, with a MK1-2 storage pod, a Science! module, a drilling module, a rover and something else.

More work on it tomorrow.

The whole ship will be six of the "drop pods", a core station structure (with orbital sats and stuff), and a propulsion stage. I don't think I'll use nuclear motors.

BTW, all stock and I'll have downloads.

Also... everytime I come near success, the precursor-made kraken eats my forerunner-based slipspace drive. I guess non-crystal mediated slipspace travel is dangerous.

okay, I gotta ask. I know, dead horse yada yada, but can you give me a schematic for the experimental slipstream drive you spoke of? I want to see if I can stabilize it. if the effect is still present in 1.0 that is.

Finally got my Mk3 Skylon into orbit with enough deltaV to get back down. No payload though. I had problems with over heating but solved it with a trick.

The front nose cone gets really hot but can take really high temps but everything behind it was getting too hot and exploded. I simply placed a small heat shield behind the nose cone and everything behind the shield stays nice and cool, even though the shield is occluded. The ascent profile was stupid though. Take off, angle plane at 30 degrees, fly at full throttle until engines die and then switch modes on the rapiers. It took all the mach and re-entry effects, (if you can call climbing out of the atmosphere re-entry that is). Closed cycle deltaV is about 1900 and I had 650 left once in orbit.
