Super moon (Sorta)

Noticed there was a supermoon tonight; decided to take a picture of it.

This is through my telescope using my phone (Literally put the camera on the lens of the Telescope)

This is the best I could get, it was very cloudy tonight, and cold. My hands were shaking and the slightest nudge caused the moon to get out of focus.

Idk why they call it supermoon. Perigee, apogee it doesn't matter the difference is not apparent to the human eye. The last few perigees happened to fall on a full moon so it makes for a good placebo effect. Nice picture though. Was out looking at the half moon last night. Beautiful.

Erm.. The Moon looks much bigger than usual when a its a supermoon. Its very much noticeable. Wherever you got your information from, I wouldn't go there again.

Backyard Astronomy by Terence Dickinson. Im looking up the page now where he states that.

I don't think he was waiting for you to tell him your source. In fact, he was telling you to forget about Terence Dickinson.

Forget Terence Dickinson? Ha.. I got a few of his books and I could've sworn I read that somewhere. But I couldn't find it.. so I do apologise.

But coming from my experience as an ameture astronomer its not "very much noticeable"." I observe the moon every other night and the past few perigees.. I couldn't notice the difference. Like I said they happened to fall on a full moon so it was huge placebo effect...

It was a little brighter maybe.

Here we go.

So a 7% difference in size from a regular moon to a super moon. 14% difference between ap/pe. So is 7% noticeable? Maybe a little bit.

Perhaps it does have some placebo effect in place, its one of those things which it would happen with. However, the difference is noticeable if a full moon coincides with the closest perigee.

Is the supermoon when it's low on the horizon so the atmosphere enlarges it?

No, its where the moon is at its perigee. A 'proper' supermoon is when a full Moon coincides with the Moon being at perigee, however there is a bit of a difference when the Moon is in any phase. (except a new one, because you can't see it!)
