Couple of noob questions

Recommended Posts

I just recently started to actually play KSP, and I've been able to launch a mun lander, space station and a ship orbiting Kerbin. What is the space station actually used for and how can I use it (sorry if this is repetitive)? I'm also struggling with getting my orbit to intercept another planet/mun, but I can make a perfect 200k orbit around Kerbin. My ship building isn't extremely well and I based most (all) of my ships on others i've seen around the web. I want to make a mun rover but honestly I have no idea where to start.

Space Stations are used mostly for roleplay or for refueling. For intercept Muns and Planets, you need to align the phase angles and inclination. For interplanetary make sure the planets are properfly aligned. Check out this guide :)

Good luck! :)

Depending on the level of automation you want, protractor or MechJeb can help you find transfer windows.

Space stations are moderately useful for hosting a science lab (though you are better off having it in minmus/mun orbit), as a fuel depot, or as a target to practice docking on. They are slightly useful as convenient transfer point between a interplanetary tug, crew shuttles, etc. Beyond that, they don't have a ton of use right now.

Bases in the stock game are mostly used as refueling depots. The good news is with .23 and the addition of the Science lab you can now make one expedition to the Mun, and using the Capabilities of the science lab, gain almost all the science in a single mission. (The Science lab has the capability to allow both the Goo can and Science Jr. to be reused) Your second question is a little vauge. If you are saying you don't have enough dV to intercept the Mun then build a bigger rocket (Or rather, a more efficient one). If you are having issues intercepting the Mun/Minmus I point you

Scott Manley has tons of tutorials on how to do things. (That one specifically is how to orbit the Mun) As far as intercepting another planet goes, that takes a little more practice. I direct you here for planning when you should launch interplanetary and here for some dV savings at your destination. As far as Rovers go, build them wide, build them stable, and build them heavy.

Edit: Double Ninja'd...

Hi, welcome to the forums.

So space stations, they don't actually have a set purpose in the stock game. You can use them for refueling, to practice docking, or for looks because some look really cool. With mods, i think you can get them to generate science with station science, or refueling and have mining operations with kethane, of course, if you are into mods :).

For getting to mun, usually burn when the mun is on the prograde horizon, and end up where i want to be, and if i miss, it usually still grabs you after a few orbits :) Planets are a littles trickier. Always test with maneuver nodes first. I personally use the mod kerbal alarm clock, but stock many use either this:http://alexmoon.github.io/ksp/ or this:http://ksp.olex.biz/

For rovers, you sortof have to expirament alot, but you can check out this thread for ideas: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/24599-Post-your-Rover-MEGATHREAD?highlight=%5Bshowcase%5D

Hopes at least some of this helps :D

Edit: completely and utterly shamelessly ninja'd :(

Rovers are best built in the spaceplane hanger and saved as a subassembly (start with a junk part as your root, like a girder, then build the rover off of that since you can't include your root part in a subassembly). Then attach it to the side of your lander in the VAB. Add an equal amount of weight to the other side to keep it balanced (like spare fuel, or even another rover), or attach to the bottom if you use radial engines.

The mobile science processing lab makes for an excellent core to a space station. It allows you to clean out goo containers and science juniors for reuse (requires two crew to function). Put the science lab in Mun or Minmus orbit with some extra fuel supplies and you can hit every biome on them with a single lander. Just remember to remove your science data from your experiments and store them in a safe place (like in the lab or a return capsule).
