Onto Earth - One off story explaining the existence of Kerbals

This is just a quick thing I wrote to exercise my writing.

The engineers on the Freya station scrambled to operate the RCS. The speakers blared a dire warning- missile approaching.

The station could take no more. The shields had been taken down by a Kraken ship earlier that orbit, and the one remaining evacuation ship had some heat tiles blown off.

“Control to Freya, Control to War Station Freya!†a small speaker at the bridge buzzed. The comms officer rushed to the microphone and pushed down the button to talk. “Freya comms in.†he said, keeping a level head through all the panic.

“Tell captain Bill - this is code black.â€Â

Code black? The comms officer felt fear rise in his chest. Code black meant certain death.

“Affirmative.†he replied, his voice cracking as he opened the channel to Bill’s radio. Being a comms officer meant you had to tell all the bad news.

“Captain Bill!â€Â

“Yes?â€Â

“Code black.â€Â

Silence for a few seconds, then “Then spacefaring civilisation is finished.â€Â

That couldn’t happen. “We’re- the last ship?â€Â

“Yes. Now listen, there’s only about five minutes until impact. Take the DNA banks, put them in a safe box and send them down to Earth.â€Â

“But the evac ship will need a pilot-â€Â

“I know. You and Bob go together. Bob’ll fly.â€Â

“We’ll die.â€Â

“You were going to die anyway.â€Â

The captain’s flat voice made the comms officer cringe.

“Right…â€Â

He shook and he quivered as he voiced his next words.

“It was nice to know you, Bill.â€Â

“You too, Jeb.â€Â

Jebediah thought back on the hectic last day as the explosion from Freya bolstered him and Bob further into the atmosphere.

“Bob…â€Â

“I know.â€Â

“Where are we headed?â€Â

“At our predicted trajectory, we (and the box) will land at a coastal area to the south-west of the Keru ranges.â€Â

“Can’t you take it inland?â€Â

“We used up all fuel on deorbit.â€Â

A few tense moments of silence passed, then Bob spoke again.

“The DNA won’t be able to grow outside of the box.â€Â

“****.â€Â

“But if we take it out, then-â€Â

“It’s a risk we have to take.†Jebediah snapped. “We’re dying anyway… Who cares about DNA poisoning at a time like this?â€Â

Suddenly the ship lurched upwards and gravity bit in. Jeb called out in alarm as his face was slammed in the back window, giving him a perfect view of the disintegrating heat tiles being ripped off behind him. The back seats folded up as the ship lurched, revealing an empty cardboard box in the storage underneath.

“Where are the parachutes?†Jeb yelled to Bill. A puncture in the hull began to leak air, and Bill passed out as a mug smashed into his head. Jeb was alone now.

He crawled forwards in the increasing gravity, grabbing onto the box just in time. A huge chunk of hull was ripped off and Jeb was torn out by the whirling air.

He was now out in empty space, and his emergency vac-suit automatically encased him in a see-through bubble.

“Release the latch…†Jeb grunted with his ever decreasing air supply. “4-3-8-2…â€Â

The case beeped negatively- Jeb had slipped and pushed the wrong code, and now blackness was creeping in his vision.

“4… 3… 8…†he typed ever slower as his whole existence was swallowed. Earth can wait, he thought to himself, I just need to sleep… Those were his last memories.

Jebediah’s vacuum bubble burst and shock heating obliterated his body as his ship disintegrated. The safe however, was heat proof, and as a flaming piece of debris span by it hit the pad… On number two. The air swung it open, and the DNA of the future world dominators was sprinkled through the air like a godly rain.

This DNA fell to the ground and smashed into the grass, seeping into its structure. Influenced by its new programming, eventually it grew into a hybrid of human and plant, into a new world dominating species known as... The Kerbals.
