i fully intend to celebrate.

that would be a rocket with seven meter fuel tanks, and a resized aeis engine.

turns out the first engine disregarded the decoupler, and nommed the second engines fuel before nomming its own, so i ended up having to quickly transfer tons of fuel as the rocket was tipping,

third stage burning for orbit and mun encounter

engaging the fourth stage to get into munar orbit, circle the mun once and returned

dropping the engine

reentry,

landed a few feet off shore.

Is there any way to make it so this part generator decoupled doesn't let the first stage use the second stages fuel? Or does it do that because I made the decoupled have fuel?

check your fuel crossfeed. Normally it shouldn't happen, since the decouplers are not crossfeed enabled.

If the decouplers have fuel, than the whole rocket is assumed as one stage and will be drained from the top to the bottom.

Congrats! I can't remember exactly when I started KSP but it must be at least 2 years now.
