My turn: New PC Build

The water cooler could be money better spent elsewhere. A stock i5 cooler should keep everything in check, just watch out for the crappy attachment pins (make sure they\'re really pushed ALL the way into their spot on the mobo.) My i7 might need that cooler, though I think it just needs a proper thermal paste application and a good way to clamp it down on the cooler. ANYWAYS. Save your money for a better video card.

Whatever happened to the days where you needed to use a screwdriver to pry the spring bar off the top of the heatsink to remove it. Never worried about poor contact with those suckers.

I\'m surprised that nobody really takes cooling by way of total submersion in mineral oil seriously.

Keeping the oil free of conductive debris is prohibitively difficult.

Also the oil is expensive and you need like 25-30 gallons.

Furthermore, you\'re just increasing the thermal mass. You\'d still need a pump and radiator system to dissipate the heat or you\'d slowly turn your computer into a deep fryer.

EDIT: Computers are also heavy enough as is and electromechanical components like rubber belt drives and motors don\'t always like extra lube. (can you imagine a 120mm fan trying to pump water? ::) )

I have built a couple computers already and pretty much the only problem with this build is the graphics card. I recommend getting this card instead: Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 6870 : http://www.amazon.com/SAPPHIRE-Radeon-6870-GDDR5-Graphics/dp/B005C8RTTU/ref=sr_1_6?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1328668201&sr=1-6

Two problems, I\'m a self-confessed NVIDIA fanboi and I wouldn\'t touch a Sapphire brand card if you paid me. I\'ve tweaked my video card selection since originally posting. Got a GT 520 in the setup now.

Arrr!

Do you really need a SSD? Do you really need a liquid CPU cooler? Also the case that you choose only comes with one fan.

Yes on the SSD, it\'s for the OS only. Also, I don\'t need more than 500Gb HD as I have file servers for storage.

I want the liquid cooler to give me potential overclocking safety as well as the ability to handle any i7 upgrade in the future.

If I can get another fan in that case and under budget, I\'ve no problem. The plan was to use the fan port on the top for the cooler.

Have a look at Puget System\'s page on submerged PCs here: http://www.pugetsystems.com/submerged.php

They must know what they\'re doing, otherwise they wouldn\'t sell DIY kits! ;)
