Mission planning by use of maneuver nodes within command building.

Recommended Posts

Hi, this may have been dealt with in the past but I found nothing on it.

It would be nice to be able to tentatively plan a mission before launching, by accessing the maneuver node system from the KSC command center or tracking station or such. We could plug in basic Kerbin orbital parameters and get an idea of whether or not we have a reasonable launch window prior to launching the craft.

Just an idea.

Thanks!

A good idea at that! It has been communicated that the developers of KSP prefer that the game experience be very unplanned, seat-of-the-pants gameplay, without planning or numbers. While I disagree with this vehemently, the Devs won't like this idea :(

I would like this a lot, perhaps it could interface with the VAB? You plan the mission, see how much delta-v you need, then go to the VAB, build your rocket, and KSP tells you how much delta-v your rocket actually contains.

This might be confusing for new players, so perhaps it wouldn't be visible right away, or a setting turns it on/off.

I would much prefer a stock delta-v readout, in any case.

I think this idea would satisfy a large chunk of the players. after all, we're mostly geeks right? playing with virtual rockets and all. it would be something that could be implented in a way that you don't HAVE to use it, then it would be 'best of both' styles of gameplay.

I think this would be awesome! I think they are making a mistake by not including something like this. I also think the lack of basic information such as TWR or DV that we need to plan out our rockets efficiently is on par with being criminal. Heck so is the lack of an auto pilot!! Its why I consider KSP stock to be STOCK with MechJeb <auto pilot + vital basic stats = win>

I'd like something like this to be a function of the mission planing building, that would make more sense- you could move time back and forth, looking for transfer windows, gravity assists- you could do a proper voyager style grand tour this way.

It could give you a simple counter that tells you the total delta V for all manurers planned. If you use the manoeuvres right, you can even get delta V for landing.

There would be some limitations, just using the one spacecraft at a time system manoeuvre nodes have now makes it harder to plan a whole mission.

Then again, I wouldn't like it to give you all the answers. Having a loose plan, then winging the rest is part of the fun.

I also support the idea of a delta V counter in the editors, that would be useful. Though there's got to be a balance between useful, immersion enhancing planning tools, and making the player use their own smarts to work things out. That's also part of the fun to me- the game doesn't give you many answers, you must plan and think by yourself. And that's much more rewarding.
