So, I thought it was about time I used my increasing knowledge of physics to create a one-winged plane.

Is that, um, thing for lack of a better word getting lift from vertical wing surfaces?

It is getting lift, kind of. It helps with yaw stability, the theory is just a really big rudder = hard to yaw in atmosphere = good for one winged craft.
