Asteroid Mining

Okay SQUAD, you're on the verge of being able to fix the whole "resource mining" screw up.

Asteroids are being implemented into the game.

It appears that the grapple allows docking with asteroids.

You're adding everything you need to fix it.

Okay, here's how.

Are you taking notes?

Add resources to asteroids.

Thats it.

PROBLEM. SOLVED.

Asteroids in orbits can serve as refueling stations for vessels. You can either treat the asteroids as big fuel tanks already containing fuel and oxidizer, or add the water resource and provide an electrolysis part to split it up.

This could even be used in the ARM pack to use the asteroid itself to generate the fuel that is needed to push it into kerbin orbit instead of impact.

Personally, I think the volume of resources in each asteroid should be random, but set would also be fine. And if what is summarized here is accurate, you're already allowing some random generation into the system, so random shouldn't be an issue.

To require more research, the base grapple may not allow fuel cross feed/transfer. A separate part that would grapple and allow cross-feed/transfer could be added. Or a ship/probe has to dock before the amount(s) of available resources are revealed. It'd also be great if this could be extended to other ship resources (e.g. monoprop) or to the planets' surfaces, but at this point, I'll take just about anything.

But back to the point:

This fix simple. It's useful. It's fun.

Please.

As has already been discussed many times, resources are off the table right now, and possibly permanently. That is why the subject was included on the "what not to suggest" list, and that is why this thread will now be closed.
