In Honor Of The Late Whackjob....

Early in the tech tree (before I traded a slide show for fuel lines and other parts):

Where I fear to tread:

That bottom stage is just the transfer stage (shown without the LV-N). Only the Whack could look at that payload, yawn, grin and then start building the launch system with a gleam in his eye.

I asked Whack to get a Paypal account going where I can donate my Dollar for his new computer.

That guys really deserves our help because he got us stunning with almost every post he did on the forum.

I like this idea.

So, with an height limit in the VAB, I've gotten ambitous.

I decided to attach a hook connected to an docking port that would fly low and attempt to "snag" the tower as it flew overhead. Unfortunately, there was an great loss of life when I tested the contraption, which means that:

1. My Kerbal Gravediggers will be busy

2. My computer can retake a sigh of relief

3. Back to the drawing board.

Perhaps doing a landing-docking with the tower 200m up is a good idea?

Those aren't very Whackjob-esque, really. Even I would have a hard time imitating his amazing constructs. To wit:

I'd rate this a Mini-Whackjob at best.

Though its inevitable demise just before staging the boosters was quite comical. Trying to fly that thing would be hard enough without FAR...

Whackjob is a forum member who once lamented that he was full of grief and coffee for having ignored KSP for so long. He then proceeded to make a reputation for himself for launching ever-larger payloads into orbit. His vessels often have part counts in the thousands at minimum, and are a true wonder to behold for their sheer absurdity of scale.

I am not trying to offend anyone, but I never really got the Whackjob hype. What is the big deal? The guys build big stuff and has fun along the way. That's great. Just like the amazing craft lots of other people manage to build.

It's his enthusiasm mostly that catches people. He doesn't give up on his insane constructs until he's absolutely certain there's no way to get it to do what he wants it to do. And that has almost never happened. That sort of dedication to sheer determination in the face of absurdity pretty much embodies the spirit of the KSP fanbase perfectly.

I think you underestimate a certain part of the community :D I see people slaving away with feverish enthousiasm on single ideas for a long, long time everywhere. People building impossible craft, unimaginable scripts or even modifying KSP in ways that the developers said could not be done.

I like to think that what we see in the entire forums and plethora of You Tube vids out there dedicated to KSP, is just the tip of the iceberg of what is being done by players of KSP; including many who may have never even visited the forums and who don't frequent You Tube. Its pretty cool what people come up with. I know there are some like that, because one of my friends falls into that category. Maybe Whackjob has become a "poster child" for pushing the limits of KSP. Regardless, I'm amazed sometimes at what I see discussed or shown in these forums, as well as what pops up on You Tube occasionally.

It probably has a bit to do with how completely plain to see his dedication to absurdity is. Sure, modders code some pretty amazing stuff, but most people don't care to know how it works, though they certainly appreciate what it does, and a lot of the dedication and effort in that kind of thing is lost on them.

You're not offending anyone, that's a perfectly good point.

The way I see it, Whack is the epitome of the KSP community. He is someone who has some kind of absurd skill level in building rockets, and makes a lot of cool content for us to stare at in awe. But he also doesn't act all high-and-mighty about the fact that his skill is almost unparalleled. He's one of the nicest guys on the forums, constantly commenting on almost everything he sees, giving advice to anyone who needs it.

That's my rant. We'll miss ya, WJ. Hope you get another kerbal machine soon.
