The Kraken is a nickname for a lot of different bugs and/or glitches. The Kraken Drive is a form of fuel-less propulsion that uses landing gear clipping through structural parts to accelerate. :)

thx, i meant to ask about that one too.

There's also one easter egg involving the Kraken, but I won't spoil the specifics

yea i know about the easter egg... it is on Bop, right?

let's show you some examples : http://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Kraken

The original Deep Space Kraken was caused such as it usually resulted in a loss of control of the craft, swiftly followed by dismemberment.

The others were basically called "kraken" for no real reason other than that people thought the name sounded interesting. If something goes wrong these days, it's not hard to find someone attributing it to the Kraken... but in actuality it generally has little or absolutely nothing to do with the original Deep Space Kraken bug.

Please note that the wiki page that was linked is not a reliable source (the first part about the original bug is correct). People like to add bugs there and name them Kraken, even when these bugs are for example caused by mods and not KSP.

If you're interested in what the actual kraken bug is, read this post: http://i.imgur.com/erQw2K4.png

Anyone knows what kraken makes the craft almost uncontrollable? I was about to dock two ships when the ship I was controlling suddenly got ghost forces and constantly was yawing and rolling the ship! Made me restart the game and it was all right.

The closest definition to the Kraken bug that I can think of is when parts skeletal structure go in positions they are not supposed and cross over. This results in the physicks engine having an equivalent to a heart attack and trying to revert the changes. The efforts of this cause an exaggeration effect and the computer tries to compensate for it by doing the same thing right away. The end result is part flying everywhere as it gets more and more erratic.

The reason it's called the Kraken Bug is because it happens to kerbals as well causing their body to flail around in really long, thin parts. The result looks like a squid going nuts and thus the term was coined.
