Possible for the game to change planetary texture in-game?

Would it be possible for the game to change a planet's texture in-game? It'd be interesting for a plugin that has some visual planet scanning mechanic (we knew about all the planets in the solar system before Sputnik, but it took probes that photographed the planets to get a more detailed image of those planets).

Universe replacer used to do this. Texture replacer might, I haven't fully checked it out yet.

If you grab the scaledspace transform of the planet, find the meshfilter and then grab its material, you can change the diffuse and normal textures. (RSS does this on load, see RSS for example)

Are you talking about using telescopes? Because that's not how the planet would look.

It's surreal that I even have to say it:

A low resolution image of a far away planet would not show pixels the way they are portrayed in that image. They would be vertical and horizontal....obviously.

It would look like this: unfiltered (left) or filtered (right).

Long story short, this thread is pointless. This can be accomplished with subsampling. It has nothing to do with textures.
