Asteroid Science

Recommended Posts

You can recover science from an asteroid with a kerbal on EVA, just like you can transfer science from modules to pods. No Claw required :)

How is the research calculated? I brought an asteroid within 1500k meters of Kerbin which is still high orbit materials study which nets 60 science points. I'm assuming that bringing it closer to Kerbin nets more science? Also, can you use any scientific instruments on asteroids?

You should be able to get the science for each situation the asteroid may be in. Interplanetary, Kerbin high orbit, Kerbin low orbit, kerbin high atmosphere, kerbin low atmosphere, kerbin ground (maybe also per biome?), Kerbin splashed (if it floats). Probably the same with Mun or Minmus if you decide to bring it there.

I hope Whackjob has his Computer ready. He said he wanted to softland Asteroids on Kerbin.

I believe there's high and low orbit sections. Last i checked scientific instruments do NOT work, only surface samples. (PLEASE correct me if im wrong.)

You're right, I just tried it with science tools and I got nothing. All I could do was take surface samples. High orbit around Kerbin gave me +60 science.

The asteroid science collection works in basically the same way that any EVA right-click options work (like toggling the landing legs from outside). They didn't any experimental situations specific to asteroids, something like asteroid near or asteroid grabbed. So the results and the science points available seem to follow the standard rules for science experiments. And looking at the sciencedefs file it looks like new results can be collected for every situation, landed, in orbit high/low, etc..., and maybe for different biomes on the surface (also possibly while flying).
