Death defying encounter.

Had a bit of fun just now.

I was careening towards Kerbin's North Pole and decided to get a EVA report at around 500 altitude (after the chutes deployed). He falls and I quickly reload. Unfortunately my chutes have glitched (probably a mod I'm using) and now I'm quickly falling towards the ground.

In a move of desperation (not even sure it would work!) I EVA Jebediah and he actually stays on the pods body. I quickly right-click the larger chute and select "cut", "Repair" and then "Deploy" and instantly press "F" to get back inside the pod. This all occurred within seconds and I barely pulled it off. I'm in a cold sweat and Jebediah is just smiling away. lol

Needless to say, I couldn't be prouder of the brave Kerbin. We got our surface sample and EVA report and had his people recover him. He has quite the story to tell. :)

Anyone have similar stories?

Not a mod, my (almost) stock installation does that too. When you quickload apparently KSP doesn't remember to put your parachutes back in the deployed state. I find if you need to quicksave while parachuting, do it above 500m. Then, though the parachutes will forget to be partially deployed, they'll come back when 500m hits and it's time for them to deploy the rest of the way ;)

Good job, nice story!

Chutes "failing" on quickload is not caused by your mods. It's a bug in the current release. Do not quicksave when your chutes are fully open.

Well that was close. He got extremely lucky. :)

I recently went to Eeloo for the first time. My transfer stage wasn't empty yet, so I kept burning it against my orbital velocity, but an LV-909 burns slow. My TWR wasn't quite what it should have been (but then I wasn't planning on landing like this) and the ground was coming up faster than I would've liked. I deployed the lander legs--lander still atop the transfer stage--and burned the very last drop of fuel from the LV-909 just in time to hit the surface at 30 m/s.

The transfer stage exploded, engine, tank, and even the decoupler above, leaving only the lander perfectly undamaged and stable on the surface of Eeloo.

The return trip was uneventful, if long. I flew by Jool and Duna for gravity brakes, perhaps unnecessarily, before a powered landing near the edge of Kerbin's northern tundra.

I don't have a picture of the end of this, but here's the story and a picture of the start.

I designed a booster seat... you know for baby astronauts or something. The command module disconnects from the bottom, and then it's full blast up. I don't know if it is controllable because I forgot I had SAS turned on, but I don't think it was.

Rocket goes up (I think I hit 40KM+). Oh... no parachutes, no landing gear, no fuel. Apparently no problem. Kerbals must be made of rubber because after falling out of the seat on the way down, he slammed into the ground at full speed (feet first even) and just bounced. A couple bounces later and he got up and walked away like it was no big deal.

I have way too many stories like this. In fact, just a few minutes ago I was testing an SSTO. It ran out of oxidizer mid-flight and started falling back to Kerbin. Miraculously, its course went straight for a large island. It was also a VTOL, so I switched on the VTOL engine right after reentry and started slowly coming to the ground. Then I ran out of liquid fuel. Coming in at 50 m/s, I knew this wasn't going to end well... Actually it did. Most of the ship was destroyed, but after the capsule tumbled several meters forward, it landed perfectly soundly upside down. Rouki Kerman lives to see another day!

But now, you need a Kerbal that is an Engineer.

I am fascinated by someone who makes 2 genuine posts and 5 that are necros of threads from last April.

A suspicious mind (like mine) would think this was a bit of 'search-engine optimisation' shennanigans.
