How close to reality does FAR + Real Solar System get you?

So I've been messing around with FAR and the Real Solar System Mods in an attempt to get a better Idea on how hard it is to actually get a rocket to orbit. However I had noticed that I have had to use rockets whose sizes dwarf those of actual reality can hardly get anything in orbit if anything at all!!! So I am wondering how close to reality do these mods get you? Is it actually harder with this layout or do I just need ALOT more practice??

I think you need to apply a re-balance patch for mass of items and fuel densities. Everything in KSP is several times denser than it would be in real life; you're effectively trying to launch rockets made out of solid osmium, which doesn't work so great with a realistically-sized Kerbin.

If you want to build somewhat realistic rockets under FAR+RSS you need to install the Realism Overhaul and associated mods, most especially RealFuels. You'll then achieve fairly realistic mass fractions (some 2% to orbit, IIRC).

I suspect the poor tankage for the stock tanks is a big part of a problem. The S-1C had a wet:dry mass ratio of over 17:1, and I believe that figure includes the engines. KSP tanks are 9:1 for the 1.25 and 2.5m tanks by themselves, and 8.2:1 for the ARM tanks

Only those 2 mods won't get you very close to realism. You will need to download RealFuels, EngineIgnitor, Realism Overhaul, DRE,Rfts engine pack or the Real Engines engine pack,StrechySRB (now in PP) and a part mod (KW rocketry and AIES). Those mods (With RSS and FAR) will bring the experience close to the real one.

I don't get why people choose to play a buggy, low definition KSP where it takes ages to do anything "fun" and in the process manage to rip out the soul of the game by changing it into something that it was never supposed to be...

Is this aimed at people that use mods in general, or just these RSS ones?

If so, i'll give you a hint: People are weird, don't trust them.

Any of them.

Me especially.

And I don't like to play with terrible aerodynamics, having flames on reentry but no damage and kerbals being able to survive forever without needing anything.

Also I don't get much more bugs from playing a heavily modded install, having reasonable loading times and I can play I'm full definiton. I doesn't take ages to have any fun, I'm indeed having even more fun than with any non-RSS install. The game was supposed to be mod able which means that mods are supposed to be.

Also seriously, why can't you just tolerate that some people have different play styles than yours?

I don't get why people feel a need to complain about what other people do in a sandbox game. I even use MechJeb! <gasp>

Also, KSP's soul was quite tasty. Tasted like...hydrazine.

I know right, why cant everyone be a purist like you and agree with what you find fun? Why can't we all just leave games the way they were made instead of modding them to match various peoples' tastes.
