Improved asteroids (2 asteroid improving ideas)

Recommended Posts

1. Chance an asteroid will burn up in the atmosphere. Class A: 95% chance. Class B: 90% chance. Class C: 70% chance. Class D: 50% chance. Class E: 20% chance. These percentages can very depending on what planet the asteroid is falling onto. For example, a class A asteroid on Eve would probably have a 99-100% chance to blow up in the atmosphere.

2. Asteroids coming in onto other bodies. To track asteroids from other bodies, you have to set up a probe in that planet or moon's orbit with a new part called the Asteroid Tracker. The asteroid tracker takes up a lot of electric charge too. Asteroids encountering other bodies is something I've wanted to see for a long time, and I was a bit dissapointed to find out that they only impact Kerbin, and on very rare occasions, Mun, Minmus, and sometimes even Duna.

Chance an asteroid will burn in atmosphere is 100% if you're not following it and that's what the game does for any ships. Apart of that, reentry damage is not implemented yet. In both cases I think the functionality (if implemented) should be implemented for all kinds of ships rather than for asteroids only. When reentry damage gets implemented in some form, I would like if large asteroids were breaking up to smaller class asteroids instead of just disappearing in one huge explosion.

That's not a bad idea. Of course the electricity consumption is irrelevant, you just stick enough batteries, solar panels, and/or NUKs to it and it can work forever. But yes, it might be nice to be able to discover asteroids (following some reasonable distribution) in other parts of the system, too.

I was musing about how we could mod asteroids to be more cataclysmic:

I sense you're thinking more about their behaviour in space, so the Custom Asteroids mod is of interest.

Those mods (especially the trojan one) looks really cool, I'll be sure to try it.

I actually though of that too. Like a Class E could break into 2 Class D's, and a class D could break into 2 Class C's and so forth. And a class A would simply just explode entirely.

I think the idea of an 'Asteroid Tracker' probe is awesome. The current amount of asteroids passing Kerbin is fairly excessive, and I think that there should be far fewer to make it a more special occurrence. I also think there should be a belt of asteroids at about Dres-orbit height that spawns in and can only be monitored with the new part. This would lend itself to realism considerably whilst adding to gameplay (You want an E-class? Usually you just TW a year and one appears, but using this new system you would have to go out and find one! Yes, go find it you lazy scientist!)

There are no random chances in this game. The devs want the same action to have the same result, every single time.

So that's a big no for 'chance to burn up'

Also there is no reentry damage, so you can't just suggest asteroids get it, when the rest of the game doesn't yet
