Good PC for hardcore settings?

Yeah, that should do fine, but be aware that ksp is not currently capable of utilizing more than 1 processor core, so your quad core won't help you very much. This means you will still get lag due to lots of physics calculations even though the graphics would be ok. Also, it can't use more than 4Gb of ram because it's a 32bit program.

Laptop i7 is pretty much pointless. The single thread performance difference between the i5/i7 is minimal, as well as laptops having significantly lower clocks.

It'll be good, but not crazy good.

Also, 16gb is overkill.

16GB is for applications. 6GB for OS. 10GB on RAMDisk for programs... because YOLO!

No problem, I understand the 32-bit limitation.

16 gb hd space you meant. I really didn't understand why minimum is dual core but KSP doesen't runnit yet. Only one core. This affects buyers more than developers think.

People seem quick to mention KSP only can address 4GB of RAM by itself whenever there are questions about system specs.

1) This will not likely be the case forever. The game is so far away from release-ready at version 0.23.x. I fully expect that by 1.0 it will be a full-fledged 64-bit application, yes this includes counting on Unity to step up as well.

2) Your system will always need more than just what the game itself can address. My dinosaur home PC has 4GB of memory (it's original motherboard died, replacements that didn't require new CPU and RAM only had 2 ram slots), and it runs terribly. KSP takes several minutes to load, there are lengthy load times between any scene, even just going to map view and back. Sometimes there are loads just during flight.

My wife's Macbook has 10GB RAM at the moment, and it runs circles around my home PC in KSP, even though it only has integrated intel 4000 graphics.

With the above items in mind, I suggest 8GB as an absolute minimum for a new computer, and 16GB to think forward for a future of KSP 1.0+ and a giant pile of high-res mods.
