Can't use external command pod?

For some reason, I can't ever enter my external command seats.

I recently undocked a piece from my space-station, which had an external command seat, just to experiment because I had never used it before. But I got right up on it, even to the point where im touching it and it would never prompt me to press "F" to enter it.

Why is this?

if i remember correctly you need to right click on it and select to sit on it. you have to do the same to get off it too.

I cant say I have a lot of experience with the external seats, I can imagine its something to do with the fact that there's nothing to "grab" and since the "board" option with the space bar only appears when you're on a ladder, since it doesnt have a ladder attached you have to click the command seat when in EVA, the menu will allow you to board

The seats work different, as psyper says. You will not get the grab prompt, and must right-click on it once you are pretty close to it.

You'll also have to right click on it to get out.

You need to right-click on the seat to get a Kerbal in.

You need to right-click on the Kerbal to get him out of the seat.
