Rosetta, Philae and Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

Quite good article giving you a sense just how dark 67P is: http://blogs.esa.int/rosetta/2014/10/17/navcams-shades-of-grey/

Ignoring the fact they've used a false color image of Enceladus, we can't really tell by looking at this photo how the comet would appear to our eyes. Even they said it's not a linear connection between actual luminosity and our vision. It heavily depends on the distance and it's complicated.

Looking at this photo I can say that Enceladus, placed away from Earth so that it looks the same size as the Moon, would be a bit painful to watch. You couldn't distinguish any surface features, it would be like a spotlight.

67P/C-G, in the same conditions, would be a bit dimmer than the Moon.

Somehow the music in that trailer reminds me of the music in the trailer for Prometheus... I wonder if it was intentional? I bet they had fun making it.

I think they are trying to compete with the Seven Minutes of Terror video.....Seven Hours of Anxious Waiting.

Hi guys

I'm posting from the bus home

so I apologize for the brevity and lack of grammar. I just had a presentation where the NASA project manager for the mission explained what is currently happening with Rosetta.

As of yesterday the landing site was selected and they will attempt the landing on November 12th!

I also got a sweet selfie with Claudia which I'll upload when I get home... I talked with her about the mission and I might get to do research with her this upcoming summer at jpl!! I'm super excited and had to tell someone!

Unfortunately she didn't know about ksp but I can happily say she does now:D

That is an amazing opportunity! What kind of research at JPL? Do you work there or is it some sort of internship program?

I'm just going through as an undergrad currently. I don't work at JPL at all. I just approached her after her talk and started talking to her about Rosetta and possibly doing science with her as an intern next summer. I'm not sure if it would be through ossi but it could be. I don't really know what type of research it would be and neither does she. She just mentioned that we can talk about it and figure out something for me to do which is arguably even cooler! I need to email her and figure out the details and see what can actually happen. It was definitely my highlight of the conference though! I'm having techinical issues and getting pictures to my pc from my phone and I'm sick right now and I don't want to deal with it. It will come soonâ„¢

I won't link such crap here because it's against the rules, but I just wanted you to know that the goblins in heads of conspiracy theorists have started to do their dance. Typical highly magnified, low resolution photos of the comet are now online, with "alien artifacts" being pointed out.

It's incredible. They're so predictable.

Yea, I made a topic about that while ago - got closed. But, man, that was so amusing. There's just no way you could come up with .... like that :D

Getting quite excited about this. Assuming there is a live stream on the ESA website, I'm probably going to book the day off work to watch Philae do its thing.

AFAIK there will be stream going on ESA TV.
