I'm trying to learn how to play this game. I seem to keep getting stuck. How do I... declare victory? I put a stayputnik in orbit. I thought that would be a noteworthy mile stone and be worth something. But then it's like I'm stuck. I can't move on from that point. I can't get back to the launch center. I finale had to shut the game down and reopen it. Or as an experiment I tried to launch some thing out at escape velocity. Again stuck and had to turn it off. Or I put some thing into Muner orbit. But now what watch it circle forever? Had to shut it down again. No credit for what I assumed would be a mile stone. What does the abort button do? I crashed a probe into the Mun. It would then let me abort but I didn't want to just start the mission over at the pad so I clicked out of it and then the camera was just stuck on the Muner surface, I couldn't get back to the abort, again with the restart. Am I just completely missing the goals or is there some way to declare the mission parameters and declare victory or at least end it in some way that you could get some form of credit? Failing that is there a list of mile stones that will give credit?

The game is sandbox, and doesn't reward you for accomplishing things. (Yet. A system of job-contracts is coming soon.) The idea is that you do what you want to do.

When you say you're "stuck," what happens when you hit the escape key? You should get a menu allowing you to leave that flight running and return to the space center to launch others.

The abort button starts a set of emergency actions. What actions? You set them yourself while building the ship. :D

First off, this isn't a game you "Win". It's just there to have fun and to challenge your engineering and piloting skills. Now, on to your questions.

How do I... declare victory?
Short Answer: You don't. Long Answer: See above.

I think your next question is a little more convoluted. Instead of shutting the game off, have you tired hitting the escape key? This should bring up a menu and from there Clock "Space Center" (If it's orange don't click it or it will revert your save)

What does the abort button do?
The Abort button activates the Abort Action Group (you can also press "backspace" it does the same thing) However, you need to set up what the abort action group does while building your rocket.

Now then, you seem to be looking for something like an achievement system (Which Stock KSP Doesn't have) Fortunately the awesome modding community has an answer for you.

Check out this mod which will add achievements to the game such as:

  • Launching a Rocket
  • Flying above 10km
  • flying above the atmosphere
  • Getting into a stable orbit
  • ...And Many more.

EDIT: Ninja'd by Vanamonde...That's what I get for trying to make my post all pretty... :D

Thanks. The esc key is the thing I was missing. And I did just get points for return from Muner orbit to landing. Whoho +20!

You can also do crew and EVA reports with a manned capsule to unlock more science experiments.

For an idea on what most people do to get started check out this Shameless Self Promotion
