My mission is in jeporady and needs your help!

Basically, I'm sending an asteroid into the sun. definitely for science, not as a sacrifice to the sun god. I had a near circular orbit around the sun and set out to fall straight into it with no horizontal velocity. As soon as I got my zero, i quicksaved and went to time warp since I was pretty far out away from the sun and the game froze and my velocity changed to NaN m/s and I can't load the quicksave no matter what I do. I also can't load the flight from space center or start another flight and switch to it or else it freezes. Is my flight boned? I wanted to try and edit the velocity through the quicksave file to be like 10 or something so it'd at least be moving a bit but I can't find what text to change to make that happen? Anyone know where that is? or something else to do? I could try docking with it but it's pretty far from kerbin.

i was so close too, I should have just left it with some velocity.

I searched the quicksave and persistence files for NaN and it comes up on mechjeb with but I don't think thats the velocity?

or should i try and give the flight a PE so it has to have some velocity? should i change the eccentricity toalmsot 0 so it has to have a periapsis and a velocity?

SMA = 6783179425.95591

ECC = 0.999999999995302

INC = 176.142135366919

LPE = 359.984290188647

LAN = 290.191277036283

MNA = 3.14159265358979

EPH = 191730441.266016

REF = 0

I believe those are the orbital stats, none that look like velocity?

Change the ECC to something like 0.5 and give it a try. E: might also want to move the decimal place on the SMA by a place to make it smaller.

Yeah it's big. I actually had a lot of extra fuel. I kept it just outside of minimus orbit until it was refuel fully to go out into solar orbit and into the sun.

yeah I'm scared to change anything in case it permanently screws it up and there's no goign back. i'll just copy everything the way it is now just in case, duplicate the file maybe.

Yes, duplicate the file to somewhere that you can have just in case. I've messed around with the values a bit before; from what I remember there wasn't a "velocity" value. Rather, the velocity is calculated by your different parameters. My one suggestion would be to changed ECC to 0.001 or something. That should bring you to a circular orbit. From there, put infinite fuel on and go to where you need to go.

Also, try restarting KSP if you haven't already. Start a flight and just hold "F9". See if that works.

Yeah I figured it was calculated. I've changed the eccentricity and made the status ORBITING instead of SUB_ORBITAL so maybe the combination of those will fix it since just changing the eccentricity didn't.

I tried loading the quicksave and it just freezes. Tried to switch vessels from another flight, and going from space center. All froze. Numerous restarts at this point.

Maybe I'll send up something else and just copy all the orbital info from something that's also really close to the sun.

As you say, those are the orbital elements. I suggest backing up the file you have, and experimenting to see what changes, if any, fix the bug. Decreasing the eccentricity would be the first thing to look at. It may not be directly related to the orbit though. "Stop and drop" is uncommon for the Sun but often done to land on planets and I've not heard of crashes like this.

Try this:

SMA = 13000000
ECC = 0.0001
INC = 0
LPE = 359.984290188647
LAN = 290.191277036283
MNA = 3.14159265358979
EPH = 191730441.266016
REF = 0

For reference, the different values refer to:

SMA:Semi Major Axis

ECC: Eccentricity

INC: Inclination

LPE: Longitude of the Periapsis

LAN: Longitude of the Ascending Node

MNA: Mean Anomoly

EPH: I have no idea

REF: The current SOI (Sun = 0)

If you want to know what those things are, try this link a great place to start!

I am going to move this to a more appropriate forum section as well.

I'll try that. I'm also thinking the fact that this is attached to an asteroid is messing with it. I don't see orbital stats for the asteroid though, only that it's attached to my ship.

Edit: that didn't work. Seems like no matter what I do the ship stays on a suborbital trajectory even when I've changed that status to orbiting and changed the values.

As far as I know, it when you connect to the Asteroid, it becomes a part of your ship and is just like any other part. AFAIK it would be no different if you were docked to another craft for example

Hmm, then this remains unsolved for now. I tried your values but no change at all. I suppose I'll try docking with it or hitting it with a claw at some point.

here's the section for the ship in the quick save file if anyone has suggestions. the ship is called sun god and the asteroid is called sacrifice to the sun god...

maybe i'll try hyperedit. no wait, you need to be able to pilot the ship to do that, which i cant do, but i could warp one near it to dock. i guess i'll try that.

Try removing the cPch and cHdg numbers. In almost all the vessels in my file they're either absent or 0. My wild guess is they save how rapidly the ship is rotating, but whatever they're for, it's obviously uncommon to have values there.

You may also need to look at the rest of the vessel, or post the whole thing here.

Got it! I time warped after I hyper edited a ship near it and I saw it start to fall towards the sun. Now I can take control of it since it has velocity and I'm falling into the sun as I type. Guess I needed to load a different flight and let gravity effect the other one to give it speed.

Problem solved the scientific way, accidentally!
