the klaw at present can only grab parts. asteroids are spawned as parts(and can be hacked into the vab menu as a part) that is why they can be grabbed. to grab the ground would require a re-coding of the planet surfaces and/or klaw. i forget if they said they would work on that, but it has been mentioned.

I never knew if they would or wouldn't attach to the ground cause I havn't tried. :P But this does seem like a good idea having the klaw clamp onto the ground. I would be useful for bases and maybe even landers

Pretty much, all the claw does is dock to the other craft at the moment, which is why you can't grab planets.

Lol. I just had a thought. In the future we may be able to clamp on the planets?? So what if planets were able to be moveable? Not as in a part, but their orbits could be changed?? Bring kerbin out of orbit and crash it into the sun!!

And due to this, I hereby refer you to my ol' buddy Scott Manley to explain why such a thing is literally impossible.

That is not a witty suggestion, but do you realise that with a ground klaw and a command seat, you could make a springy thing (usually, these looks like horses or bikes) that we have in parks ? Pump it with RCS and you are done ! I agree over 100% with OP.

I imagine treating planets as movable objects would mean some performance hit as if they were extra "ships" ... not that I know anything about programming... for very little benefit. It would be kind of cool to think about, but you couldn't really do anything with it - probably not even with nyrath's Orion mod.

Gilly is the smallest celestial body (except ARM-pack asteroids which are already movable); according to the wiki its mass is 1.2420512×10^17 kg. F = ma so to apply an acceleration of a millimeter per second (which might get lost in game noise) you'd need ... 1.24 x 10^17 kg * 10 ^-3 m/s = 1.24 x 10^14 N. Game measures thrust in kiloNewtons so that's 1.24 x 10^11... a Mainsail is 1500 (1.5 x 10^3). So that's ... a bit under 100 million Mainsails. The new KS-25x4 engine cluster is 3200, so you can cut that about in half...

Yeah, not practical.
