Linux mod compatibility (heavy testing).

Hey!

For couple of days now I am on Kerbal Testing Grounds (a copy of game that I use for testing :P) trying to research which mods can be safely played on linux. I've tested dozens of them and selected ones that go to the next stage of the project - extensive gameplay testing.

Here are the mods that I was able to get running on Ubuntu 13.10 in a 32bit game (at the moment used mods crash 64bit version, but 32 bit is not that far behind when it comes to game performance).

I hope that someone will find that info usefull:

Mods that I was able to start game with (all together I mean, thats the point of the testing) and play for half an hour:

(all current versions. I will add the version numbers and proper names later)

- Toolbar

- CustomBiomes

- Distant Object

- Dmagic Orbital Science

- Engineer Redux

- FerramAerospaceResearch

- Firespitter

- KAX

- Kethane 0.8.5

- Klockhead_Martian

- KSPScienceLibrary

- MagicSmokeIndustries

- MissionController

- Docking Port Alignment 3.11

- Procedural Fairings

- RealSolarSystem

- ScanSat

- ScienceAlert

- ThunderAerospace (Lifesupport and fuelbalancer)

- UmbraSpaceIndustries (Modular Kolonization System)

- Joint Reinforcement

Now I will test those in extensive gamplay to check if they work fine in later stages of the game.

Those mods work with the above but I decided to play without them (I want to have best gameplay experience possible):

- Deadly Reentry 4.7

- Environmental Visual Enhancements 7.3

- Better Atmosphere

- Building time

If you would like to start up a Linux mod compatibility project, I'd be happy to help you test mods out to see whether they work under 64 bit or 32 bit versions of the game. I have Ubuntu 14.04 x64 LTS installed on my computer.

I applaud the attempt, but I am confused in general: why would any particular mods (except perhaps those which attempt to directly access files on disk or something) not work in Linux if they work in Windows?

I have tried out 50 or so mods, and I've never found any of them to fail in a Linux-related way (ISA MapSat is the only one that reliably failed, and I don't know why yet).

I'm using Linux Mint, 32-bit version. I found that ISA-sat worked, but was extremely CPU-intensive, and then I found SCANSat, which I prefered, so I've stopped using ISA-sat. I did have Chatterer working OK earlier, but IIRC it stopped working and would cause a hang on startup when we switched to 0.23.

KW Rocketry works fine. I have had Cactey working in a previous game on 0.23. Didn;t obviously cause any issues, but I didn;t get as far as launching a space telescope before The Kraken destroyed my game well my attempts to edit the save file, after The Kraken banished Bill to the centre of the sun destroyed it, to be honest!)

Mechjeb2 - no issues, aside from the general one that having the dV window open on launch slows things down.

Porkworks' inflatable habitats - seems to work fine.

Kerbal Alarm Clock - works fine.

KSP Interstellar - no issues so far, but I've never gotten as far as unlocking the more high-tech stuff, the small cylindrical radiators are the first (and so far only) thing from KSPI that I have used

Connected Living spaces - have it installed, haven't had chance to try it out yet.

Kerbal Attachment System - works fine, no issues (other than fuel transfer prob which isnl;t unique to using KAS)

My main problem is that fuel transfer seems to be very 'iffy'. I think this may have to do with having to use a modifier key in order to do fuel transfers, as I have seen a message stating that 'sticky keys is ON' appear after holding the shift button down, but when I check teh settings in XFce, they claim that sticky keys are OFF. Either way, no matter what I try at times (and I have this problem in my current game at the moment), no matter what I try, whether I use teh keyboard as if sticky keys were on or off, nothing is working. I would suggest that it may be better to enable players to pin the fuel tank displays open, and if two or more are pinned open, to allow the user to transfer fuel between them. This would avoid the problems that can arise with the use of modifier keys.

It's durned frustrating, having gotten a couple of Kerbals stranded on the Mun to land a refuel drone nearby, link up using a KAS pipe, then find that I can't get fuel transfer to work, either between ships or between the two fuel tanks on the refuel drone!

kOS v0.13.11 has a weird issue with the Linux version of KSP 0.24.2, namely that Unity does report strange keyboard codes for some keys, including Return, making it impossible to use the kOS console. Luckily the issue is know to the kOS developer and a working kOS.dll file is available here and the issue will probably be fixed with the next kOS update.

Other addons I found that work on Linux and have not been mentioned yet are:

TAC Life support

Kerbal Isp Difficulty Scaler

Remote Tech 2

Vessel Orbital Information Display

Fine Print

Astronomer's Visual Pack.
