Welcome aboard! A good place to begin making efficient designs is a little old thing by the name of Asparagus Staging. It uses fuel lines to feed a series of boosters in a sequence, and drops off empty fuel tanks/engines when they are no longer needed. I think you should definitely dig into that a little bit.
