Help Finding Games

Hey. I'm looking for open-world FPS/FPSRPGs made in or before 2004 but after 1998, to ensure they run on this crappy laptop. I've already tried both Deus Ex games, Postal 2, FarCry, and Fallout 3, and I don't want to be given System Shock 2 or Morrowind, because I'm not a fan of the horror genre and Morrowind's combat just seems counter-intuitive.

Ever heard of Half Life? You should give that game a try.

There's also a game called Serious Sam that some FPS fans might like.

I own two copies of HalfLife: GOTY Edition, and I've played them a bunch, not to mention having beaten Black Mesa. But neither HL nor Serious Sam are up my alley. I'm looking for an older game that's like Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Deus Ex, but not. FPS and Open world are what I want.

As for Gothic, I'll check it out.

And as for Special Agent's ideas, those games aren't compatible with my laptop. Dark Souls II and Payday 2 are both too new, and I don't want an MMO. Remember, January 1st, 1999 to January 1st, 2005 is my target area.

Hmm... I can't think of too many games from that era that are both first-person and open world. Most of the open-world games (Ultima series, Fallout 1 and 2, Bioware's old Dungeons and Dragons games) are top-down RPGs, while most of the first-person shooters (which have already been covered, mostly) tend to be "on rails" for most of the plot. I think combining the two is a relatively recent innovation in gaming history.

I'll just drop a link to Good Old Games in the thread, since that's my go-to place for most older games. Might be worth poking around some of the search tags.

Garry's Mod? AKA the best game ever. Runs awesome on the crappiest computers!

I tried it, but again, it's not the right kind of game. It doesn't even run that well on my PC.

Remember, all open-world games are sandbox, but not all sandboxes are open-worlds. Fallout 3=Openworld Sandbox, GMod=Regular and Ordinary Sandbox.
